Discussion The Famiboards While We Wait For The Direct Backlog Challenge [ENDED: Summary posted]

Okay, let's actually do this.

Yesterday I begun my second run ever of Hollow Knight. I played it around 2018 and beat it with an score of ~60%. Now I plan to get to 112%.

Will I achieve it in just under two weeks?! Probably not. But I will try!

You can sign me in right now for, idk, 2%.

I'm on the last chapter of Vanquish.

Should I put you in with Vanquish as your game?

As someone said on this thread, I will double down on the Toree's games (since they are short) and I will also try to complete TMNT: Shredder's Revenge.
Nonetheless, I should try to finish Neptunia vs Senran Kagura.

So, Toree, and Toree 2, and Neptunia vs Senran Kagura?

(Is TMNT out yet?)

I will join! There's plenty I could include, but I will start with two games and see how it goes.

  1. Death's Door (25%) -- I will focus on that this week. Hopefully I can have some solid progress by Sunday if I'm not able to beat it. From what I understand, it's not a terribly long game, especially since I won't be too focused on 100% or anything like that.
  2. Luigi's Mansion 3 (50%?) -- It's been awhile, but I know I have beaten a few bosses already. I like the game, but for whatever reason I haven't dedicated the time to beating it. I will plan for this one after Death's Door.
Looking forward to it!

Sure, I'll throw my hat into the ring.

Hoagmaster
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses - I've finished three of the four routes and am going to power through the last one since I've already covered a lot of it. Also want to get to the expansion pass content. Think this could all be done by next week for Three Hopes.
  • Triangle Strategy - I dropped off this one a while back and want to get back into it. But piling up strategy RPGs may not be a wise move...
  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected - I finally finished the main game a few weeks back and now, in a likely futile attempt to catch up before Xenoblade 3, I want to go through this one and squeeze in Torna down the road.
  • Mario Strikers Battle League - This one doesn't have a story like the other games listed, but I've barely cracked into it since I've been focusing on Three Houses. I figure playing through each cup could fill that requirement. Either way, I want to sink some time into it.
  • Miitopia - Er, I haven't booted it up.
  • Famicom Detective Club 1+2 - See previous comment.
  • New Pokémon Snap - ...See previous comment.
  • WinBack: Covert Operations - I'm going through the N64 NSO games by release date and this is the next one on the list. Never played it, so I'm wondering how I'll feel about it.
Main ones so far, but I'm sure there are plenty of downloaded things I'm blanking on. Upcoming things like TMNT: Shredder's Revenge and Omori are on my radar and I've got a bunch of stuff on my wish list (i.e. tell me when it's on sale).

OP should be up to date now, let me know if I've made any accidents or missed something.

Day 1 of this challenge is going ... as expected, haha. HFW has been sitting in the PS4, ready to go, and I have played absolutely nothing so far, as I've been busy with chores, and after chores I'm usually too tired for games.

But this is a challenge after all, so I guess I really have to pull myself together and go shoot some dinos.

Can anybody tell me how long it's going to take me to beat a single run of FE: Three Houses? I've had it on my backlog since the last time it went on sale and I started it the day before this thread went up. Am I straight up doomed to fail the backlog challenge?

(Also any general advice on how to recruit characters from different paths (and any characters that are super OP or fun to have around) would be greatly appreciated, please and thank u 🙏)

Cool!
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land (~80%)
  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (0%)
  • Links Awakening Remake (Maybe 20%)
  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake (0%) (Will not even try to finish that)
I fear that my list will not change much in the next two weeks, but I want at least finish Kirby, which shouldn‘t be to hard of a task.

I have so many games in my backlog it’s not even funny, but I will choose the following two games that I want to focus in before the Direct / Sunbreak release date.

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim - I am currently at 60% completed and my mind is still being blown

Atelier Ryza 2 - 0%

As someone who has been intermittently working on my first playthrough of Bloodborne for a couple months now (to clarify: it's my second try at playing it. First very limited attempt left me frustrated and bewildered at what exactly I was supposed to do lol tried it again with a bit grit and it just clicked) I will have to declined. This is a great idea though.

I have an update! Unsurprisingly cause Captain Toad is short.

  • Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker (Just Started Episode 3)
  • Steamworld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech (Still on Chapter 2)

I had the day off today so I made pretty good progress on all three of my games. Cuphead, I've moved along quite far, around the 68% mark. We Love Katamari, I cleared about four stages, and DQV I played for about 4 hours. It was a nice way to spend the day!

All three are fantastic games in very different ways. I've got good variety here 😄

Paper Mario Origami King: Third ribbon done (~60%)
Kaze and The Wild Masks: Three worlds completed with everything except Time trials. (~70%)

I'll start TNMT when I finish Kaze game.

I'm going to do Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Skies (NDS romhack) starting today!

Decided to spend most of my free time watching anime instead of playing games today, but I’m making solid progress nonetheless. For Klonoa 2 Dream Champ Tournament, I wrapped up the first two worlds on the first day of the challenge and cleared the third today. I’d say I’m about 50% done as there are five worlds and then hard EX levels if you get 100% in the normal game. I just played the first GBA game shortly before this challenge and I think I might like the level flow more in this one. One of the new mechanics where you throw a monster at others to suck up enemy monsters to power up and break colored rocks has some extra clever puzzles attached to it as you figure out how to carry that first monster around each map. I also really appreciate the R button now lets you pan the camera around most maps so you can better plan out how to solve each puzzle room. I have mixed feelings on the new boss rooms, but I appreciate the variety in objectives so far and the third one with the cannons was very cool.

As for Fire Emblem Awakening (my first proper Fire Emblem), I did play about three hours yesterday I think? I had started on hard casual and then switched to normal casual. I think I made the right decision since this really is helping me to learn how to play the game. I know it’s in part since I don’t truly have to worry about it, but I occasionally lose one unit each map still. I’m worried I’m not spreading around XP correctly (I’m swapping out the team a lot), but I’m excited to learn how to play it properly. I just got Donnel on my team who I know is a fan favorite so I’m still very early. I didn’t get to it today, but if I put one more solid session in I think I’ll get farther than any past playthrough I attempted which is exciting.

This seems interesting! I want to try too
Currently playing:
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (at the end of chapter 2) [Switch]
  • Higurashi: Matsuribayashi (at the end of chapter 1) [PC]
  • Code:Realize - Future Blessings - (I think I'm at ~50%) [Switch]
  • Taisho x Alice: episode 1 (50%) [PC]

I'll start the challange today with a bit of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore now✨

I made a ton of progress yesterday as 13 sentinels really started to dig it's claws into me & now I'm dying to get back into it today for a couple of more hours

Incident at work today which made me a bit upset and not in much mood to play games.

In any case, I found HFW to be a bit daunting yesterday, so I think I'm gonna go warm-up with Telling Lies and then maybe move on to There Is No Game..

I made a ton of progress yesterday as 13 sentinels really started to dig it's claws into me & now I'm dying to get back into it today for a couple of more hours

Awesome to hear!! It's such a good game <3

I ended up installing CTGP-7 on my 3DS and going through that, so I think I'm losing this challenge

Cleaning up some side quest lines in Arkham Origins, I think I should be able to finish it before the Direct, only one ability is locked at this point

Finally got a chance to sit down and begin Aggelos properly this time, and the music is already punching my feels in the gut. Or punching my gut in the feels.

Or something.

Whatever's going on, guts and feels are involved.

Backlog:

Great Ace Attorney - 60% done
FFVII - like maybe 5%, no idea honestly
Earthbound - 10%?

This feels kind of daunting, even though I've actually made great progress on my backlog so far this year. Here's what I actually have finished so far, which I'll put here so that I don't sit here and panic about these huge games I need to work on haha:
  • Octopath Traveler
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Pokémon Brilliant Diamond
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus
  • FFVIIR
  • Triangle Strategy
  • Mario + Rabbids DLC
  • Return of the Obra Dinn
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  • Unpacking
  • KH: Melody of Memory
  • Kirby’s Dream Land 3

Busy work day today, but I'm on the last stretch of Cuphead at least! Knocked a few more bosses out tonight. I expect I'll finish the game by Sunday!

Chose Riolu and Espurr.
Survived the Intro sequence, Obliterated Beach Cave (now with Monster house!), Managed the unskipable cutscene, Defeated drowsy, onwards!

Ok, I finished Tunic the other night. I've started Fire Emblem Warriors. So far I have reached chapter 4.

More to follow....

I finished my first game for the backlog challenge! I finished Klonoa 2 Dream Champ Tournament 100% with all EX stages! Overall I preferred this game to its predecessor. The flow was generally much better and it had a few gnarly puzzles that stumped me for a while. Only the rolling log levels I would say were worse than the horizontal hoverboard equivalent from the first game. The EX stages were more execution based than puzzle based compared to the first game and I appreciated the different flavor to each one. The last EX level reminded me of Ninja Warrior as you kept climbing up ropes and rocketing upwards and was probably my favorite overall (the fourth one, Whale Park was delightfully mean).

My biggest criticism was the generally not great soundtrack. I don’t know if it sounded better on the GBA, but the soundtrack for the last normal world in particular was obnoxious. I usually like electronic stuff, but it was this annoying beat that looped way to quickly and sounded irritatingly tinny. I ended up muting the game and throwing on my own music which I basically never do lol.

Again overall, I largely enjoyed it and I’m glad the backlog challenge here kept me on track to beating it. I’m excited I’m all set now to play the first Klonoa 2 next month and I’m now down to only 16 remaining Wii U virtual console games! I haven’t made any new update on my second game, Fire Emblem Awakening, since my last post. Though my weekend up in the air, I should be able to get back to it at some point tomorrow.

Beating all the Halo games back to back made me realize how much variety they have compared to infinite.

While I really enjoy the overall gameplay loop of Infinite I can't help but think that it would have benefited greatly from more mission and visual variety.

The old games really highlight this even more. Still the best 343 Halo tho imo. Singleplayer wise at least.

OP is updated.

First check-in is tomorrow, friends. It will have to be a bit early (12PM European time) since I'll be busy the rest of the day.

The check-up works so that I will simply make a post and list the progress all of you have posted about here.

Glad to see some progress so far, happy for you all!

As for me, I must say I lost it a bit when (Horizon Forbidden West mid-game spoiler)

The game takes you to the ruins of Las Vegas. I've been there myself, so it was cool to see it

Just beat 13 Sentinels. It was a fantastic game!

Really glad to see the 13 Sentinels love in the thread. Glad you enjoyed it!

Looking forward to it!
Got to the credits of Death's Door earlier today! It seems there is some post-game material, but I think I will put it aside for now since I've beaten the main game. I really enjoyed it! Challenging but not too punishing, great music, interesting world and story, many good things.

Now I need to beat Luigi's Mansion 3 before Fire Emblem comes out (it's already this coming week!!!)

Whoa shit, finally some accountability

Let's see.... if I'm not going to just continue my Bringer of Chaos run in XC2, I need to play:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • Paper Mario (NSO)

Alright, going to continue a "subthread" of my journey.

Played some more Skyward Sword last night. Finished the second trial and now I'm boating around in the Lanayru Desert.

Haven't touched Paper Mario again just yet.

Alright,

I found a ball that looked like a seal and recruited it to my team, awesome. Found some evil Skunk and he farted on me which I did not like. I am now taking one for the team in my persuit after the stinky skunk. Watch out for screeching fairies. Note to self: If I may find cogwheels during my journey be sure to not break them or time will be distorted. Scary.

onwards!

Update from me, just beaten the story mode in TMNT: Shredders Revenge! Will now focus on Days Gone to finish that off this week

Here's my update for Sunday--

Cuphead-- finished!!

And it was awesome! I did 100% completion

We Love Katamari-- finished!

Really great sequel to the first game. I didn't 100% it but I felt satisfied after rolling credits

Dragon Quest V-- I put about 5 hours in this week. I can only approximate, but I believe I'm around the halfway point of the game (50%)

I have also added some games to my rotation

Final Fantasy VII Remake-- Intermission (probably like 20%)

Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed (I want to beat the career mode, and I'm about 40% of the way there right now)

Hope everyone has been enjoying playing some good games!

Good lord you put in work.

Been focusing on Digimon Cyberslueth, I’m on chapter 7. Also been chipping away at EDF World Brothers a couple missions at a time. Also picross s2 and voxelgram

Hahaha 😂 I finish games quite frequently. Those two games make numbers 45 and 46 finished this year.

I'm also lucky to have some time off from work this month to help but, even with work I constantly go through the games I wanna play lol
Amazing speed. When I get through the two games I have earmarked for this thread it'll be.. I think four or five for this year? 😅

Thank you for making this thread. It's a very fun idea.

@WhyS
1. Shin Megami Tensei V - 0%
2. Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday - 0%
3. Policenauts - 0%
4. Tokimeki Memorial: Beneath the Tree of Legend - 0%

I almost always play one game at a time, and I just beat Berwick Saga yesterday and haven't started my next game yet, which is why everything is at 0% right now. I was planning on playing Tokimeki Memorial next, followed by Policenauts, which means that I should be able to finish two games before the next Direct!

Once these four games are done, I'll be finished with my backlog and have to start a new one. I'm getting the physical version of Shredder's Revenge, so I still have about a month and a half until I have that game. I'm waiting to see if Sonic Origins has a physical release or a nice sale rather than paying $40 for the digital version. I have Xenoblade Chronicles 3 preordered, but that's also over a month away. I might get Omori at some point, but I covet those sweet sales prices. Still waiting for more news about Dragon Quest III and a Switch release of the Pixel Remasters.
My Sunday update is as follows:

1. Shin Megami Tensei V - Still at 0%.
2. Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday - Still at 0%.
3. Policenauts - Went from 0% to 50%.
4. Tokimeki Memorial: Beneath the Tree of Legend - Went from 0% to 100%!!!!!!!!!

Despite it being the worst version of Tokimeki Memorial, I still had a ton of fun with the game. During my first playthrough I ended up with Yuko, and I have absolutely no idea how that happened. My second playthrough went horribly. I had girls dropping bombs left and right, and so I ended up with the backup girl, Miharu. My third playthrough went smoothly, flawlessly, I was an expert. I had everything lined up to be with Shiori on that final day of high school, and I got Miharu again. I did everything required for Shiori, all the stats and dates and getting into the best university, but I guess they made it harder in the Super Famicom version. That was disheartening and so I moved onto Policenauts.

I LOVED Snatcher, but I only like Policenauts so far. Snatcher clicked with me immediately and I found the story engaging from start to finish. Policenauts has a slow opening, so slow that in the Saturn version you are actually given the option to skip an early sequence on a plane because people complained about it in earlier versions. (By the way, this is the first Saturn game I have ever played and I'm very excited about that.) I also find the world and plot less interesting than Snatcher. That's not to say that I would like Policenauts more if I had never played Snatcher, it's just that it's an easy an interesting comparison to make. And I still do like Policenauts and look forward to playing more. I'm six hours in, and going by HowLongToBeat, that puts me halfway through the game. Also, it's crazy how Kojima invented an entire language for the characters to speak throughout the game. That's what I love about video games, how they can take us places that would never exist in the real world. For example, a world with a language where every word ends in either a vowels or the letter n? That's wacky! 😎

I should be able to finish Policenauts before Wednesday, which would still give me a week before the Direct. I am going to up my goal to three games and try to finish Buck Rogers before the Direct as well. That will leave only Shin Megami Tensei V left in my backlog, which will be the second time I have finished off a backlog with a big JRPG. Last year I had Yakuza: Like a Dragon as the last game in my backlog, and I loved it.

I meant to get more time in on Aggelos tonight but I just realized I've been sitting here with my Switch on and the game highlighted for almost an hour while I talked to myself about cars.

So in case yall were curious, yes! I do have hobbies outside of gaming! It's just that they're depressing.

UPDATE: According to a walkthrough looking carefully at the list of chapters/temples, I might be about 50% through Aggelos. But looking at howlongtobeat's estimates compared to my in-game clock I might be more like 25%. 😅
Tough to tell.
But the point is I'm playing a game.
So heap praise upon me.
