There is no way that's true, right?
It's heavily rumored yeah. I am on the Sonic Frontiers discord server. On the game's subreddit, many journalists have come out anonymously and said the PCs that they played the build on were old and may have suffered from a memory leak and there were other sources saying every build was different, hence the wildly varying impressions.

Sega just can't stop shooting themselves in the foot. every little unforced error just makes this whole rollout look more and more incompetent. I wonder if all of this was a last minute thing (relatively)

Reused level themes, different level design.

Y'know, given that the game's plot focuses on restoring Sonic's memories, the Cyberspace levels reusing assets from previous games makes a kind of sense. These levels are (assumedly) based on Sonic's memories of his past adventures.

Honestly, I would have been happy with a Generations 2 long ago since there are endless levels they haven't touched on yet. This is the best of both worlds!

Yeah there have been enough Sonic games now that when people were saying "booo, where are new level themes?" I was kinda like "...what's left that Sonic hasn't covered though? 😅" Honestly if they wanna reuse level themes that haven't already been redone to death (looking at you, Green Hill and Chemical Plant) but with new layouts, I'm down. The Sonic Speed Simulator made a pretty awesome modern Hill Top Zone area, for example, and that gave me serious nostalgia pangs. I'd be fine with revisiting old areas like that.

Yeah it’s paired with the open world where they are clearly evolving the game and putting a lot of effort in, so I don’t mind.

Think of it like the “pandering” classic sonic in Forces… except hopefully they don’t fuck it up.

Not gonna lie, given that they did similar themes from Generations in Forces and those levels sucked I'm suddenly getting those flashbacks and am concerned with how intricate it will be when we officially see them on the 29th...

Reusing stages isn't a problem itself, the issue I think most people have is that these are the same stages, the same assets from Generations. I'd love to see more 2D stages reimagined in 3D.

A stage theme's identity is almost entirely in it's art design. Of course if you only go by descriptors like 'floating ruins', then yeah, everything's been done already I guess. They can do another floating ancient city ruins, and it look and feel completely different from Sky Sanctuary, and that's what people are mostly looking for.

That's what they want you to think so they can reuse 10 year old assets.
If it's a level or two, it'll be fine. But if this is going to be most or all of the cyberspace content, yikes.... I wonder how bold they are to go down that road.

It's a shame because Sonic has so many interesting surrealistic places like in Mania.

Who says they’ll all be reused assets? Some might be newly recreated throwbacks. A mix like Mania.

They can stretch 9 Zones to 20+ different mini-stages, for sure; But I think they might pull some things from Forces and Lost World too, if it is to contextualize Sonic remembering past adventures..

Not less lame imo, but at least justifiable on lore;

Even before the Summer Game Fest footage started rolling in I had this fear, based on past leaks about the cyberspace levels and Sonic's amnesia, that they'd be contextualised as him "remembering" his past and be an excuse for them to reuse older level themes again.

I hate being right about that.

I'm not convinced that they're actually pulling back from Generations though; I really think they'll just pull from Forces only. "But MondoMega! Forces doesn't have Sky Sanctuary!" I hear you saying; and to that I present you with:

forcesfrontiersk3kxw.gif

The Sonic Forces mobile game! The basic corridor level design is seemingly a better fit too! :)

Yikes, don't do that to me lol. I’ve been very optimistic about this game but that would be the straw that breaks the camels back for me.

Last 3D Sonic game I played was Generations. Sonic Lost World as a whole did not appeal to me the biggest reason being how Sonic played/felt the movement was way too stiff. Sonic Forces, would have to be the bland and short level design. Not sure what happened to Sonic team or who left the team after Generations/Unleashed but >imo< The level design has not been there since. Unleashed/Generations had peak boost gameplay level design >imo<.

It seems like the padding in the recent games have been grind rails. Now I don't have a problem with grind rails they’re good fun and they help pace you for the next set of obstacles. I start to have a problem with them when 50% of the level is grinding and it turns into a mobile game where you’re just constantly swapping between “lanes” dodging obstacles in said grindrails.

Since the early reveal footage of Frontiers I have been giving this game the benefit of the doubt. If the cyberspace levels look more like Sonic Forces level design, that would be a huge let down for me.

I want this game to be great and I want to buy it but they gotta step up their level design. If you enjoyed World and Forces more power to you, I hope you enjoy Frontiers as well! I’m hoping they can show levels that compliment the hub “open zone area” or better yet becomes the games’ crown jewel.

It's a problem if it's going to be more than 2 or so throwback levels, this was never marketed as a throwback and nostalgic game.
We’re barely 1 month into the marketing cycle so we will see!

By the way, Imran mentioned on his preview that every embargo material it was given to him when he played Frontiers on the SGF event, they all called the game "Sonic Rangers"; I think the change of title was something made on last minute;

I guess it's a way to see it, but.. it still assets from Generations either way ;P

I was actually trying to think how many times each of Generations levels were reused...

Green Hill - M&S 2014, Forces, Speed Battle and Frontiers;
Chemical Plant - Forces;
Sky Sanctuary - S&ASR Transformed; Speed Battle and Frontiers;
Stardust Speedway - Sonic 4 Episode II;

Speed Highway - M&S 2014;
City Escape - Speed Battle;
Seaside Hill - Not exactly recycled just yet, but the Seaside Hill track that exists since the original All-Stars Racing, seems to be updated with more current assets from Generations lately;

Crisis City - Already recycled from '06;
Rooftop Run - Already recycled from Unleashed; used yet again in Team Sonic Racing;
Planet Wisp - Already recycled from Colors, albeit updated/upscaled to HD; used again in Speed Battle and Team Sonic Racing;

(I guess there's Sonic Dash too; I know they pulled Mushroom Hill from Generations 3DS lol..)

I know most of the spinoffs "doesn't count" in the mind of some, but it's equally tiring when you're paying attention so close to the series; At least pre-HD era, they'd have a much bigger pool of older games to pull from (see the M&S games on Wii).. now, they're basically limited to pulling from all the same couple of games since Unleashed ('06 is barely referenced in that capacity);

Yeah, i’d still be upset about them revisiting older level themes again in what was supposed to be the big new Sonic game, but it’d at least be more tolerable if we were revisiting stages that weren’t revisited already this decade. What if the 06 stage was Kingdom Valley this time, or Sonic 2’s was Mystic Cave? A new spin on Twinkle Park or Final Rush for the Adventure games? If the game is about Sonic recovering the memories of himself and his friends, there you go; the trip to Twinkle Park was an important moment for him and Amy; ditto for Final Rush and Shadow. Lava Reef for Knuckles (where they fight before Eggman betrays Knuckles)? The aforementioned Kingdom Valley for Silver (where he and Sonic finally work together)? Pick out something for Blaze (from Rush), something for Cream (from Advance 2); they’ve got options!

If they’re out of ideas for new Sonic stages they could at least remake ones I haven’t already played in 3D with the boost formula. It doesn’t seem like they are though, and that’s a shame.

Yeah let's give other classic zones some love!!
Starlight from Sonic 1, HillTop from Sonic 2, Marble Garden from 3, Mushroom Hill from &K, Sky Deck from Adventure could be cool with modern graphics, literally anything other than City Escape from Adventure 2...

I'd actually be down with this game being Generations 2 with open world hubs and no Classic Sonic. 😅

But if they're just reusing preexisting levels from Generations and Forces, yeah that'd be less than ideal.

God why do I feel like you're gonna be right 😒

I really hope the cyberspace levels aren't a corridor fest. That Generations -> Forces Modern level design downgrade was so massive.

Is this real? Well, if you had Origins containing Frontier's code that confirms Big's (Big) return and fishing... there you go!

EDIT:

LOL this is actually hype for me, I love Big!

I wonder if he is just a NPC that teaches Sonic to fish or if they are going to actually let us play as him again?

I'd love more oddball stuff like fishing back in Sonic. But when they can't get the core game design down, them just adding extra random stuff really sours me on the idea.
