Film 'Joker 2' will be a musical. Lady Gaga in talks to play Harley Quinn

From the Hollywood Reporter...

The Joker is back, and this time he’s bringing a friend.

Lady Gaga is in early talks to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in director Todd Phillips’ sequel to Joker, the 2019 Oscar-winning, $1 billion Warner Bros. hit based on the DC character.

Phillips has been co-writing the script with Joker co-writer Scott Silver for some time and has finally shown it to the studio. Last week, Phillips revealed on social media the title of the new project — Joker: Folie à deuxthe title referencing a medical term for an identical or similar mental disorder that affects two or more individuals, usually members of the same family. And while the same social media post showed Phoenix reading the script, the actor’s involvement is not exactly a legal fait accompli just yet — sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warners has yet to close a deal with the actor, with the two sides deep into it.
Enter Gaga.

Details on her character are being kept under wraps, but Joker is known for his on-off abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the mental institution known as Arkham Asylum who falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick and partner in crime. It is unclear whether Phillips and company are using other DC characters or striking on their own, as they did in many instances with their first movie.

If a deal makes, Gaga would play Quinn. However, this new Quinn exists in a different DC universe than the Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, which most recently appeared in 2021’s The Suicide Squad as well as several other films.

But wait, that’s not all: Sources say the sequel is also a musical.

I saw this via FamiComms and thought it was the Onion at first.

Well this is something. I've already said my piece on Twitter, but I both love and hate this. It still feels like milking the lightning in a bottle that Joker was (at least from a commercial and Oscars standpoint), but this idea is so bonkers with such an extreme take that it's probably either going to be incredible or horrendous, so I'm excited from that standpoint.

It's certainly more interesting than "Joker: Joker Again".

I suppose if there's something you don't want to do with a joker sequel, it's make it predictable or boring.

Wait. Joaquin still isn’t offical?

Nah…he was the best part of the first film by far. Actually that’s a bit unfair, I found the cinematography and Score to be pretty great (surprisingly for Cinematography) production design wasn’t bad either.

I'm always down to see more Harley Quinn in stuff. There seems to be this push recently to make her more of an anti-hero rather than a straight up villain. Hell, in that recent Teen Titans GO/DC Super Hero Girls crossover movie, she joins the DC Super Hero Girls as a straight up hero by the end.

Wow. Wasn't expecting that at all. Count me in, though. Sounds like it could be a fun time.

I’m all in.

Really liked the first film and Phoenix is an amazing actor and really made the role his own. I liked seeing that interpretation of the character and not tie it down to the comic book BS, which annoys fans, but to them I say, you have a million comics to go back to.

Plus I always thought the cool thing about Joker is that depending on the writer, he has been whatever they want him to be as there is no real origin story.

And now this is a musical? It’s a fine line to tread, but if they pull it off, it can be wonderful.

Or it could implode.

Either way, I’m all fucking in!

Joker was a good movie that doesn't really need a sequel at all. But at least they're trying to do something interesting with it.

The first was already super provocative, I wonder if GUASON DOS will still get people wishing for some mass casualty event just to prove that media can be too sus or something.

You know, I am okay with that! As someone not into comic book movies much, if you’re gonna do one, rip off Scorsese.

For the third one, fuck it, and rip of Casino lol Or Passion of The Christ.
I know you mean Last Temptation of Christ, but Passion of the Joker would be incredibly funny

Going off the rails stupid with this is probably the only way this won't feel like a retread of the first. There should be a law that says every comic book movie adaptation with toothless "social commentary" has to make a musical sequel to balance things out.

I really really liked the first one. Yes, I watched Taxi Driver(before) and King of Comedy(after) and while I agree with their inspiration the movie struck a different chord for me. It's was a crazy visceral experience and in some scenes I was so immersed that I started laughing on despair.

At the same time I don't think it needs a sequel. So maybe a musical could be a good way to try something different.

Though I'd want them to have courage of introducing a morally gray Batman in this universe, a rich guy that leaves home at night to beat poor people that commited crimes, even small ones.

I'm a little monster so I'll watch Joker just so I can see Joker 2 at launch.
Well that's a dream case scenario to me. A musical starring Gaga is like a 3 hour music video by her(or maybe a visual album?). That's just everything I've ever asked for. Damn I love this woman so much, she saved my life.
