Sega has announced the MEGA DRIVE MINI 2
mega-drive-mini-2.900x.jpg

WHAT WE KNOW:

- It will be based on the Model 2 Mega Drive/Genesis in terms of design
- It's gonna have 50 games
- Some of those 50 games will be Sega/Mega CD games!!!!!
- The games so far confirmed for the unit are Silpheed, Shining Force CD, Sonic CD, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Popful Mail, Virtua Racing, Bonanza Bros, Shining in the Darkness, Thunder Force IV, Magical Taruruto, and a brand new Mega Drive/Genesis port of the seminal cute-'em-up Fantasy Zone
- It's going to launch in Japan on October 27th, 2022 at a price of ¥9,980
- It will include a wired 6 Button controller
- You can pre-order one right now on Amiami as well as a spare controller as the unit only includes one
- Yes, there will absolute be a silly, purely cosmetic CD Add-On + Virtua Racing Cartridge you can buy if you really want it to look "complete"
- The emulation is being done by M2
- Yuzo Koshiro will be creating a new main menu theme

WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW:

- If it'll release outside of Japan. The original Genesis/Mega Drive Mini did, however many of Sega's mini retro consoles, such as the Astro City and those tiny Game Gears did not.
- What the rest of the games are
- If it will include Snatcher

WHAT WE CAN CONSIDER:

- If this DOES release outside of Japan, which again is not guaranteed, it would give Sega a great opportunity to right the wrongs of the first Mega Drive/Genesis Mini and include a 6B controller internationally
- The emulation is by M2, who also did the work for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Nintendo Switch Online apps, so there's a non-zero chance the Sega CD Emulation work here might result in those games appearing on that service at some point, though my personal guess is it won't be for a while, as they're going to want to sell as many of these units as they can first.
- The PC-Engine Mini had Snatcher so this will probably have Snatcher
- It sure would be cool if this released internationally, and also included Snatcher

M2 is doing the emulation and Yuzo Koshiro is doing another medley for the main menu, like on MD Mini 1. It's all on the official site.

So hyped. That first 11 games is a great lineup.

I hope this means Okunari & M2 add CD/SVP games to the NSO MD app too.

Not too excited about yet another port of Fantasy Zone, but they already had me by including Sega CD games. The Lunar games have to be in the final lineup, right? If they end up including Snatcher in English this might be both hard to get and impossible to resist.

And as for Genesis games, Quackshot and Rocket Knight please!

Can't say I'm super enthused about yet more Genesis re-releases, but at least CD games are in there. Crossing my fingers that Snatcher and the Lunar games make the cut.

Worth it for shining force cd, and if we get this in Europe… I doubt we get the superb 6-button pad

I’m just gonna say

I really hope that a year after this is out, they can port their Sega CD code to the NSO Genesis app so we can get Sega CD games on that app.

Shining Force CD and Popful Mail are already massive gets. Those games cost a cool $300-400 each on the second hand market!

M2 is probably the only company that could make a second mini for the same console and still make it a must buy even if you owned the original.

Pretty much all of those SEGA CD games are
  1. Never re-released before
  2. Extremely expensive on the second-hand market.
Yes, even Sonic CD. While there is the modern ports, this is the first time the unmodified original has been re-released in any form. As Sonic Gems Collection was based off the PC version and had various graphical errors. This is also the first time the Japanese opening theme has it's original vocals, as the 2011 release had to replace it with an instrumental for licensing reasons.

Virtua Racing is also an utterly nuts addition due to it's usage of the SVP ship. Especially considering that the reason why there's no 32X games (or a Saturn Mini) is because the inexpensive ARM chips on the market still aren't powerful enough to emulate them.

Apparently it’s 20 CD games too

I just hope the western releases won’t be completely bereft of the best CD games due to licensing issues. I think this could be a TG16 mini type release with some untranslated or Japanese version releases, which would be fine by me.

The form factor is the Mega Drive model I had as a kid (though it had red buttons, maybe that was a European thing?); so this is kinda tempting between the form factor nostalgia and the Mega CD games.

I'd hope that the Mega CD comes to NSO, though...

Amazing list of rarities. My OG mini is sitting collecting dust with the rest though. I find it hard to find time to play all my Switch games and I haven't really touched the Series X since we got it... So I'll probably buy this if the games aren't left untranslated if it hits western shores, for another piece of plastic to dust... 😅

With MisterSpo... Mega CD on NSO please! Worried though that these are some niche niche deep cuts that might cost too much to licence.

This went up for pre order on Play Asia today and the website didn’t work and it’s sold out now. So that was fun. As soon as this gets an NA announcement and release, better get on within seconds to get a pre order.

Ahh I’m gonna regret not pre-ordering the Japanese version when I had the chance in about 6 months, aren’t I?

I hope not. I think there will be more stock eventually on the Japanese retailers. They seemed to have better allocation of these mini consoles than the west. Hopefully these can come via NSO to save us just in case.

Honestly if they start getting CD games on NSO I’m gonna cry of happiness.

Honestly, I wish Sega and Hudson would make digital versions of Mini's on consoles at this point. But now that M2 is doing Sega CD, there is zero reason not to have it on their NSO app either.

It’s all M2, right? They did the Mini emulation work, they did the NSO apps, there’s probably a lot of code reuse between both, right? I don’t know how stuff works but I have to assume there’s reuse going on. They also did the PC-Engine mini so maybe they can reuse code from that too when they inevitably bring PCE stuff to NSO

Just do it M2!!! Just do it Sega!! Make me happy!!! Make us all happy!!!

Yup! And like, I already gave up hope on a Sega Saturn mini, and right now I have a Sega Saturn with a bunch of games collecting dust because TV's no longer have RGB, Component, let alone S-Video. So at least give me Sega CD and PC Engine

MCD and PCE/CD on NSO make too much sense. Probably just depends on what Nintendo's willing to pay for.
I am paying Nintendo SIXTY FIVE CANADIAN BUCKS A YEAR

and I would happily pay even more for MCD/PCE/PCECD

because I’m a nasty freak

Honestly the best thing that could happen here, IMO, is that after a year or whatever, all the Sega CD emulation work they’ve done here, along with all the game licenses, come to Nintendo Switch Online. As cool as mini consoles are, they’re impractical. The controllers are wired, you need to access the console itself to reset/change games/etc, and they’re frankly hard to get. I like that they exist: a tiny plastic Genesis or SNES is cute. But I don’t like the idea of these games being made available ONLY through the mini console. Putting them somewhere else, like on NSO, will give people an easier, more seamless way to access those games.

Why are we going back to only shipping with once controller? Just tack an extra ten bucks or whatever and ship the system with two controllers.

Sega sure does what Nintendon't, alright: having a fantastic concept with seemingly great execution before falling flat on their fucking face due to some boneheaded decision of theirs. I suppose depending on the situation, you could say this also applies to Nintendo, but that's a discussion for another day.

It's a shame because I'm still interested in the product. Because while these mini-consoles are kinda impractical, 1) they're neat collectibles, and 2) assuming this ran on the same or similar firmware as the original Genesis Mini, then you'd easily be able to rip the roms and use em for whatever you want. Like to give an example, it's neat and all that Wily Wars is on NSO, but I don't own anything on NSO. Meanwhile the rom from my Genesis Mini is mine to do whatever I want with it.

I know it's not the best solution for every person, but it's one I liked, damn it!

I’m interested enough to buy this, but not interested enough to go out of my way to get one if there’s a lot of hoops to jump through.
