News Super Mario Land DX Colorization Hack released - Hard Mode, Luigi Mode, Colors!

Gingerbread Man

Toruzz, who previously made the amazing Super Mario Land 2 DX, has just released a colourization hack for the first Super Mario Land! Toruzz has also added a Hard Mode and the ability to play as Luigi with his The Lost Levels physics.

Actually, this is the 2.0 version of the patch - the previous release had some major collision and frame rate issues. This version also adds the ability to use an SMB-style Mario sprite (whereas in the previous version you were forced to use the new custom sprites, of which I'm personally not a fan).

By the way, Toruzz is also working on Kaeru no Tame DX and another hacker released Metroid 2 DX some years ago. A full list of colorization patches by various hackers can be found here, but be wary that their quality is inconsistent (the recent Wario Land hack could be improved in a lot of areas, IMHO).

I played version 1 of this a few months ago. I enjoyed it, but I do think that the size of the new sprites threw me off a bit. The fact that version 2 addresses this and adds more on top of it makes this a must play. I'm gonna download and set it up tonight!

Yeah, something is... off with the new sprites. Leaving them as an option is a great choice and the new version is the definitive way to play the game!

The Mario Land 2 color hack is a masterpiece. I think Land 1 and 3's sprites are more problematic in terms of how you color them, so I get why they redrew the Land 1 sprites, but the Land 2 one is the kind of thing I wish Nintendo would officially license, like Sega does with Sonic hacks.

Bumping this thread to say that, after over a month, I finally got to play the new version of Land DX.

...and despite what I thought I would do, I actually played on the new graphics mode, not the old graphics mode. I didn't notice it when the hack came out (even though the description mentions it, oops), but the Mario sprites were redrawn to make them more proportionate with the classic style sprite, and it looks much nicer than in Version 1. What I also didn't realize was that Version 2 does a much more extensive job to re-draw the game's objects and enemies. They both better resemble the official art and help the new Mario sprite feel more cohesive with the experience. And the best part is that if you don't like those changes, you can choose the original sprites and still get the colorized experience. Best of both worlds.

I haven't gotten the chance to try Luigi, just the base Mario, but he's a great option to have. I also like all of the little touches in the menus, from the selected brother being the one at the top of the screen to them changing their overall color or expression to match your graphics or difficulty selection. Very glad I gave this hack a second go with the new version.

Still have that game loaded up on my 3DS. I don't know what it is but its one of those games that you can play forever. I must have finished it a 100 times already. I would love to see a color remake one day as I don't play these type of hacks (don't want to go to the trouble of setting it up).

I kinda want remakes of the Land series, they're kind of the abandoned Mario games, despite pulling 2 characters from them (Wario and Daisy).
