In other news. This arrived today for me and, I think, my record collection is officially done:

Much like how I felt upon finishing the Mario Galaxy duology... my music collection has peaked. It's only downhill from here.

Seriously if you ever want to take my tastes seriously look at this post and assume otherwise

100 gecs is unironically entertaining and stimulating music

I'm in the mood to stir up trouble. Which is the better game, Metroid Dread or Metroid Prime?
I didnt manage to play prime during its prime.

For me its gameplay is dated, its story and lore are mediocre compared to the sequels and as someone used to hd visuals and all i can only think prime aged well, not be blown away by its visuals.

Dread for me is peak 2d metroid. Its fast paced, controls amazingly, and thankfully isnt shy of using certain previously introduced elements, like voice acting or the amazing mix of cinematics with gameplay. Even if just a bit, im glad VA was used. Dread is absolutely the better game imo.

I know the rumour says it will just be mostly a visual revamp, but i truly hope they update a few gameplay things in the so called prime remake.

Prime is still better

as much as I love Dread and wanted it to get GOTY two things that hold it back for me behind Prime are

1) I think they went a little too far in terms of figuring out how to avoid players getting lost for stupid reasons and not allowing them to get lost at all. Like there were some parts where I was like “oh I got this thing that I know I can use on that thing I saw earlier let me go back there and … oh wait cant“ because the game wanted me to do exactly the thing it wanted me to do in a relatively small section before I did anything else.

The “Oh I got that thing!” And rushing back to where you can use it is one of the most satisfying things about this style of game, and this game does have that feeling at times still but atleast on my first playthrough it seemed like I was stopped when trying to do that so much that I gave up and just went to where I felt the game was leading me at the given moment

2) I felt like when it came to the emmi’s I was getting by them more due to good RNG rather than learning their patterns and getting better. Or sneaking by the sections how the developers probably intended to. Some of the interactions are better than others but I think the fact that you spawn right outside the section every time you die rather than go back to where you last saved in basically every other Metroid ever was a sign. Imagine how much worse whatever complaints there were about Emmi encounters if you had to go back to a save room every time. I think I would have preferred it if they were designed in a way where you were kicked back every time you died because without that respawn crutch developers wouldnt have written off the amount of bad RNG deaths you can get as no big deal and instead designed them in a way where you felt more at fault for every death.

I didnt find them hard or anything and I don’t really have complaints other than they just felt random. Like they weren’t as fun or well designed parts of the game to me as the boss battles were

Like you can’t just crash through the boss sections in a similar way. There didn’t feel like a point in playing the Emmi sections safely knowing youd just spawn at the beginning. Why spend 10-15 minutes being cautious and maybe still dying anyway when you can Leroy Jenkins it and get through it in 2 minutes?

Rewatching GoT Season 1 and I’m just glad that

Drogo finally gave Viserys the crown he wanted so much after all. Such a warming moment.

All the people that think Metroid Zero Mission is the best say “Hey!”

✋
While I'm not sure if Zero Mission is the best, since I didn't have much time with Super, I really vibed with Zero Mission. It has a terrible 100% completion, but a basic, casual play is so much fun.

I'd like to say that Dread is better? But I need more time with it and the other games.

I need to rewatch Eternal Sunshine one day. Loved it when I watched it but I’ve only seen it twice and that was over a decade ago lol. The films I’ve listed were all ones I’ve rewatched over the last year or two. Pendemic gave me a lot of time to dig in.

-I think Goodfellas would’ve made my top 10 if it was just paced a little better at the end. It’s such a rollercoaster movie that it’s exhausting watching and you start to feel like Henry at the end. Still, one of the best soundtracks in film ever that’s for sure.

-I love that inglorious Basterds allowed itself to be sub-titled. Always annoying seeing a lot of Hollywood films speaking English in non-English speaking countries lol, like there was a scene in Wonder Woman 2017 where it’s Germany but every soldier is speaking English. Only a few words too, just let them speak German. Ratatouille is a bit guilty of this and not having any French actors is still a issue I have with the film. But the movie feels like it drags too me when I watch it. I find it unfortunate that I prefer scenes from the film then I do rewatching the film itself. Still tho, it’s a film I wish it came out today to see the reactions lol.

- I love Whiplash. But there’s a ton more films about obsession that I perfer. Like The Prestige and whatnot. Tho Whiplash been really simplistic helps out a ton. But it is glaring in some scenes like the dinner one that felt more “rushed” and the relationship scene falls flat for me due to having so little time. Even then, great film and loved the ending.

- 12 Angry Men is one I have yet gotten the chance to see. I guess you can say it’s on my backlog lol

-Parasite is Fantastic. But I’ve only seen it once in theaters and would love to watch it again in the future before putting it in any list. Off the bat, I think I still prefer Oldboy for South Korean Films

- scream. I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t care for it when I re-watched it. love the opening scene but it still didn’t leave much else for me. I’m not really a big Horror genre person, films don’t really scare me cause it’s film and my mind catches all the editing and tricks no matter how many times I turn off my brain. Even horror games line Until Dawn, I could spot the jump scares a mile Away and felt more of a chore to see. It might be slasher films. The Thing is a absolute favorite of mine.

Film discussion is fun.
You have to watch 12 Angry Men soon! One of the most perfect distillations of prejudice and empathy I've ever seen in a film, and it's riveting despite being confined to one location. Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb are sensational.

Whiplash is just one of the most perfectly edited films I've ever seen, and Fletcher joins Joker, Anton Chigurh, and Hans Landa among my favorite villains of the 21st century. Damien Chazelle always crafts a breathtaking 3rd act.

Watching Parasite for the first time without any hype (after Cannes, before U.S. theatrical release) was one of the most visceral responses I've ever had to a movie. I was SHOOK. Couldn't believe how masterful it was.

Totally get how you could feel Inglourious Basterds drags, for me it has the best villain and and several of the best scenes in Tarantino's entire filmography, plus perhaps my favorite opening scene of all time, plus an incredible ensemble and IMO it's the most satisfying of his revenge films. It isn't for everyone, but I even love the talky third chapter. Unrivaled tension for me in some scenes, and great use of black comedy.

I'm with you that most horror doesn't frighten me, so why I love Scream so much is that it added meta commentary and black humor/slapstick elements to an otherwise typical slasher. The opening scene is an all-timer, but I also love how the movie is as much a whodunnit IMO as a horror movie, and I still think the killer's reveal and motivation is brilliant.

I support Nate in any athletic endeavors, especially those sponsored by Manscaped. I also would be a happy man if the jersey was pointing to an E3-esque Direct announcement tomorrow (May 15th), or the actual air date being June 15th. Either way...go sports?

Prime

and I prefer 2D Metroidvanias

Dread is great, don’t get me wrong, but Prime’s accomplishments, to me personally, are incredible

they made Metroid work — and thrive — in 3D. they created a shooter so rooted in exploration and the world that it just felt like an adventure. it made exploring so rewarding, and enjoyable elemental puzzles, and just such a world, y’know?

like maybe it’s not that huge to other people but I fucking hate shooters. I’m trying to check more of them out, and like Portal / Half-Life 2 still resonate for me… but I hate shooters.

and Metroid Prime was the “oh but I love this one and want to play it” moment for me. the “oh shit a shooter can do really incredible things.” the ways in which it pulls all the Metroid sensibilities, and then adds almost a little extra Zelda, but then it’s a first-person shooter with such wonder in the world with a dash of tension and horror? it’s gold, it really is.

and GUESS WHAT HATERS Metroid Prime 2 is also really fucking good.

I still have to try and play through Prime 3, but so far I’ve really disliked it. All the things that make it more like other shooters of the era make it more annoying to me. There’s a lot less of that “dropped onto a planet having to figure it out alone” feeling. (I’m not very far and I’m told it gets better).

and like y’all can miss me with space militaries and overwrought cutscenes most of the time. not particularly my cup of tea.

I had more to say but now I’m tired and rambling so… voila!

It's not fifteen, it's one-five. Meaning, you guessed it, Team January stays winning.

None of those Metroid games are as good as Hollow Knight.
Metroid Dread and Hollow Knight are about even IMO. Metroid Dread has the advantage in gameplay, combat, control, and cinematic presentation (all the cutscenes and overlooks), while Hollow Knight has the edge when it comes to level design, artstyle, music, and amount of content. The boss battles are phenomenal in both. I like playing Dread better, but that's more a testament to how good it feels to control. If Hollow Knight has one weakness it would be the lack of direction (it's really easy to get lost), while if Dread had one weakness it would be that it's a little too linear (AFAIK you'll never find a hidden boss or a hidden weapon). They kinda balance each other out.

That being said, this is like comparing Gravity Falls and Avatar The Last Airbender. We're lucky to have both.

Played some Mummy demastered today. You know I appreciate when someone decides to flip a genre on its head. A Metroidvania where you aren’t the chosen one with legendary power ups, you’re a replaceable generic grunt scavenging what weapons you can while the undead corpses of your predecessors try to kill you is a great concept

Idk I prefer the combat in Hollow Knight. I prefer the poke and dodge type approach and also that you can pogo bounce with your sword over Metroid’s whole shoot 1000 projectiles everywhere deal.
Controls as well I didn’t think Dread was great? Too many different buttons to hold to use missiles and aim and stuff, I pressed the wrong combo of buttons extremely often.

I also never really found myself getting lost. It’s a big map but I always had a direction to explore in and never got stumped.

But yes, both games are phenomenal and we are in a golden age.

I was more referring to the control of the character. Apologies for the mixup, I didn't know what else to call it. Samus just feels absolutely fantastic to control, easily the best out of any video game I've ever played. Sliding, double jumping, free aiming, etc, all feels completely natural.

Dread is indeed an absolute pleasure to control from the very beginning. It honestly might just be the best feeling game of all time in terms of movement—and I mean ALL games, not just 2D games, platformers, or Metroid-inspired games. You eventually reach a point where you are no longer moving but rather FLOWING from room to room, and it’s just

Dread>Mummy demastered>>>>……>>>>>…>>>>Hollow knight. Pacing and difficulty just wreck HK for me. Too bloated

Why are you zoomers even using your Switch for YouTube? I can’t imagine it’s a better experience than on a laptop or whatever other 100 devices you have?

Ngl I didn’t even realise the Switch had a YouTube app.
