I would ask for another Valkyria Chronicles but then I fear the writing would be similar to VC4 where sexual harassment is portrayed as a joke

It's kinda hilarious how we're going from a month with no major releases to a month with a ton of them + a Nintendo Direct that will inevitably add more. Coming out in June:
  • Mario Strikers
  • Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes
  • Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
  • Wreckfest
  • Omori
  • Rabbids Party of Legends
  • Sonic Origins
  • Fall Guys? (Might come out this month though. Whenever it is it's coming soon)
Meanwhile May has maybe Fall Guys and practically nothing else.

My parents are currently trying to get a raccoon family to leave their hourse alone lol. They've been breaking in to the lanai screen and going up to the glass windows begging for food lmao. Climbing on the roof too. They have babies with them which are adorable but they're causing a lot of problems for my parents.

Anyway, maybe someone, umm, familiar with raccoons here can speak with them and ask them to leave my parents alone?

I'll see what I can do, but if your parents are able it's best to call animal control.

I'm pressing charges.
As you should. I saw the way that dude carried you out against your will.

So I actually had written literal paragraphs in response to some of the stuff about achievements and Nincels (stealing that one Raccoon, sorry bud), but after I kept reading through and seeing where the conversation was going I felt worse and worse until I decided to delete all of it and instead make a post promoting:

So there yall go ❤️

No man, I'm actually willing to have my mind changed

I'm just something of a curmudgeon about video games in general

Sega failed because they put too much emphasis on gameplay. Now that they've abandoned intricate mechanics with series like Yakuza they're seeing much more success.
Yakuza sales have been in decline for a while, the series has grown in the West but not enough to make for the decline in Asia/Japan. It has been speculated that the change in gameplay in Y7 is the result of the underperformance of Y6 (y6 underperforming it's a known fact not speculation) , the turn based combat and references to DQ was them trying to appeal more to the japanese market.

Sega success nowadays is almost all thanks to Sega Europe/Sonic/Atlus

Oh same here, definitely. I'm a hella curmudgeon. The paragraph I wrote about your post was not what I was referring to. I wrote a whoooooole lot more before I even got to yours that I wiped before I even posted. 😅😅😅

Man, both me and my wife feeling just horrible and having a 1 year old who's just her chipper self is not easy.

Went for a big walk, saw some trees and turtles, then caught up on this thread. Swiftly moving on:

Re. Tantalus, I've been saying for a little while now I don't think Nintendo are dropping Zelda ports this year. If Breath of the Wild 2 makes the fiscal year, or sticks to next spring, I don't think Nintendo will feel the need for other Zelda titles in the run up to it. Thanks to Breath of the Wild plus the other series titles on Switch, they're still going to sell a few million copies of Zelda games from now until the new game launch.

2012 was the last year without a Zelda release at retail. I think this is the next time that happens.

Only 3DS. I almost finished OoT I think but I just lost interest at some point.
Shame, the 3DS smoothes over some stuff that make the N64 original a bit difficult to go back to. But if you didn't enjoy it there's no point in forcing yourself.

What do you think is the cons of OoT3D?

Maybe calling them cons is a bit harsh but I think the brighter colour palette is a bit of a downside in OoT3D even though it's afaik due to the 3D effect. I also think that the 3DS isn't ideal when it comes to playing 3D games, even if the controls have been improved. But it's much more of a "definitive edition" compared to MM3D which has several divisive changes.

Also I'm super bummed about the Saga of My Missing Stuff. Sinking into Mass Effect would make the fact I have to spend a lot of time alone due to illness much more tolerable.

Re-organized my drawers with games and I thought to myself, man there's a lot of pretty artwork on these games.. here's a few of my favorite.

A thing I really like is that with collectors editions of games, they dont add PEGI ratings which makes a whole lot of difference looking at both BotW and XC.
Hong Kong releases doesnt have any ratings on them either which I wish would be the norm.. but hey, at least there's no USK to be seen :>

Persona 4 is a good game. Hope it gets ported.

Ah.

The brighter colour palette is a common thing brought up, I suspected you'd say that, and I agree upon that. I really think, though, that other than that, it's pretty much a definitive version of the game that outdoes the original.

MM on the other hand, is a game I have far more personal issues with.

I wonder if most people know how extremely important the Mario Movie is if we want Nintendo to start using their IP's more outside of Video Games
I don’t think It’s that important they are already doing it in other ways like theme parks, more merch and we know they have planned more multimedia projects of their franchises. Mario Movie performance could affect in any case how they treat movies with their IPs but not multimedia in general

I am probably in the minority here, but I don’t really want these IP used outside of games. I guess it will help diversify their revenue streams, but I can only imagine how blunted any artistic license will be with Nintendo being protective of their biggest brands and wanting to ensure the appeal is as kid friendly as possible.

It bombed everywhere, Wii U original release probably has outsold all other versions together by quite a bit and that was a huge flop
Steam 294 player peak https://steamdb.info/app/1190400/graphs/
Switch version didn't do any relevant numbers in any chart or didn't chart at all
'Tis a shame, really. I do wonder whether it might have turned out more successful on Switch -- moreso, even, than its post-WiiU releases combined -- had it remained with Nintendo (mainly due to perception and support).

Regardless, I'm not about to be blamed for its lackluster performance.

And it’s a top 10 game of all time and deserves everything. A sequel, a Smash character, a movie, a Netflix series that gets cancelled after 2 seasons.
When it released, I did think Wonder Red would be a good option for Super Smash Bros.I, would just fit right in.

Kind of rival Captain Falcon and his famous punch. Which makes me think a Wonder Falcon character might have been a neat little nod, and then the captain could have a color pallette to reference it.

All this to lead to the reason we should all be glad Mario Kart 8 is set to continue being the current iteration for some time yet (even though, to my great dismay, Kart is no longer contained all on cart: F-Zero can be positioned as the headlining racing game for the new Nintendo hardware. We've got boost power!

My partner's neighbor like to play music very loudly outside, and i just overheard him listening to Imagine Dragon's Believer.

Anytime I hear the song all I can think of is the Switch commercial with that song in it. Not even a big Imagine Dragons person, but that was a great pairing. Made the early marketing feel very confident.

Depending on who you talk to, that's how the Mario brand has already been treated since the mid 2000's, so take that as you will.

Reminder: 10 Days (May 23) before credit card purchasing is no longer possible from the eshops. Will still be able to add gift card balance until August. If you linked your NNID to a Nintendo account and share a wallet, you can add funds through switch up until closure.
Just putting this here as a reminder.

They even released Segagaga, a game where you are tasked with saving the companies console business, 2 days before the Dreamcast was discontinued. Next level awareness there (though I’m not so sure the development was made with that in mind).
Didn't seem to come up in this interview series that they were closing up shop when Segagaga went to market:

As a Nintendo kid growing up even I feel sad these days that Sega bowed out. I think their systems had a much more palatable identity to them than what Sony and MS have been putting out lately. There was absolutely a sense of play and experimentation with the Dreamcast that you really only see with Nintendo these days. Sony and MS are just way too conservative design-wise and while I'm sure that's appreciated for developers it just makes everything feel like buying a new Carolla or Camry every 5-7 years.

Also, I had no idea that Rez was originally a Dreamcast title. I've always associated it with Sony.

Once again, Sony benefitting tremendously from their competition taking risks

i really hope its watchable at least, because i want this shit to do well so we can move on to ips that are better suited to be a film or series lol

yoooo I didn’t know they added EMMI to the Spirit Board in Smash

In other news. This arrived today for me and, I think, my record collection is officially done:

Much like how I felt upon finishing the Mario Galaxy duology... my music collection has peaked. It's only downhill from here.

Seriously if you ever want to take my tastes seriously look at this post and assume otherwise

Man, I remember back then when Nintendo was just dropping these absolute bangers of adverts and trailers left and right. You had the BotW Switch Presentation trailer, the two excellent Odyssey trailers, the always-good Xenoblade trailers and your Imagine Dragons advert, then a year later you had the immaculate "Everyone is Here" Smash reveal (and the CGI reveal itself was great too).

Talking about peaks, I don't think Nintendo's reached that high since then. Such a good time.

Whatever this illness is, for some reason it's making me extremely emotional. My daughter is watching Frozen which I've seen like several hundred times and in the beginning where the dumb parents decide they need to keep the sisters separate I just burst into tears.

Speaking of. Why isn’t 1/2 Remastered on Switch? Seems like it would be easy to port and probably sell just enough to make some money (I could be wrong here though as I was a day one Dreamcast adopter and played the hell out of Shenmue back then).
My theory is that it has to do with them using 1&2 as a cash-in for the crowd interested in 3, and 3 is a PS exclusive sooo..? 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure if this is considered a hot take within either fandom but I actually think they're almost nothing alike :x
I was simply referring to the "soul over gameplay" bit. 😅

Chrono Cross' new box art is such an improvement, goddamn

Hard agree. I miss the old Sega, even though they were plagued with management issues and kinda dug their own grave. On the surface it looked like creativity and bold risk-taking being punished in an in industry where they should be rewarded, which was an unfortunate precedent to set. I think the industry would be better off with crazy 90s Sega still around.

I was gonna try to catch up on the thread buttttt it seems like shit got heated about achievements?

I don’t really want to backtrack into a bad time so I will put my thoughts on achievements (and my ability to read) back in my pocket

freed from the curse of literacy I shall soar unencumbered! byeeeeeeee

It’s weird. There is definitely some Shenmue in Yakuza, a series I also love, but none of the unique stuff that I love about Shenmue made it into Yakuza.

I like it when their non-gaming products are complimentary to their games, like how the Pikmin shorts were used to expand on the original two games and convey a feeling for the Pikmin that you cannot experience in the games. Or how the Zelda manga are retellings/reinterpretations of the events from the games.

As far as using their IP to make something new and standalone... I'm not really sure. My take is basically that I like Nintendo games because they're game-ass games first. A medium like film that has no interactivity whatsoever feels a bit ill-suited for some of their series but that doesn't mean it can't work... I'm just a bit skeptical.

Dreamcast was wrong time wrong place in a lot of ways. Arcade heavy lineup when they are dying in the west and a little too early to take advantage of internet capabilities when access was limited a lot of places outside of Japan. Too bad really because they had so many good games for the system (their sports games were hands down the Best at the time too).

Platform Holder Sega was best Sega and I’m happy I lived through those years.

That is correct, because Yakuza is good and Shenmue is not good

for real though, they share the same core spirit, putting the player in a small, detailed environment, having an emphasis on mundane tasks on top of the story in order to make the character more plausible. Yakuza probably wouldn't be as it is without Shenmue, but there are many differences between the two so imo you're correct calling them different.

It's pretty nuts what happened with one of their main investors or C-suite people basically tapping into his personal savings to keep the company afloat at the time.

Watching that series really made me realize how incredibly lucky Nintendo was during the 3DS/Wii U era and while Iwata didn't throw his own money into the company, taking a pay cut feels like it's on the same level.

I can't imagine any American company doing the same as the Sony/Nintendo executive leadership if they found themselves in a similar situation.

Having played neither of them I was always under the impression that Shenmue crawled so Yakuza could walk/run.

On the contrary, I think that certain series are more ripe for such than others.

Miyamoto always saw Star Fox as being a serialized series like "Thunderbirds" and mecha anime, so why not go for it, for example?

If friggin F-Zero, of all things, could get a 50 episode animated run, pretty much anything can!

IIRC it was the CEO, and he did it on his deathbed, knowing he was going and wanted to save the company on his way out.
