Me digging the OG Game Boy out of the closet:

"Hello old friend"

I would've used clip of Eddie Valiant getting out the revolver box from Who Framed Roger Rabbit but I don't think that clip has aged well :(

Just now seeing this, and very excited! I had a great time in the last event, and while I don't think I can be as through I plan to at least get my three raffle entries.

Although the only game I think I would need to buy to knock them all out is part time UFO...

And buy it you should!

I'm at 30 treasures in Great Cave Offensive. It had been a while since I played Superstar and I forgot how good it was and how much attention to details it had. I've also realized that a bit of Sakurai's Smash DNA was showing there, with all the different movesets for different copy abilities, it's crazy that a SNES had so much variety. I don't think I've ever gotten all 60 treasures so this is a great opportunity to do so and I'm having a blast.

As for the higher tier, that one's gonna be tough. I don't own Forgotten Land yet and I don't feel like playing through Kirby Clash so Smash it is for me but... I kind suck at Smash lol not sure I'll be able to do it. But I'll try.

@Chaotic Neutral Submitted for your approval, Endure the Pain and A New World: Conquered

I made a quick run through the game to unlock, and every time I replay I forget about the "time limit" on Dark Matter and run into the ground. I think it's a really cool event for an NES game. Fortunately I smushed him easily in the VS mode since I had just learned how to dodge the crisscross stars from the main game ;p

I ran through forgotten land with my wife, and we loved almost every minute. The kind of game that leaves you wanting more. We became briefly addicted to the fishing minigame as soon as it unlocked, and used it to grind out the last star coins we needed for the gotcha toys. I'm very fortunate that she prefers to play as Waddle-Dee. If you're having trouble with the last bits of the game, playing with waddle dee will also let you cheese some things that are typically harder. For example no-damage missions only check for damage to Kirby, and the game doesn't care if Waddle-Dee dies in the arenas so he's basically free damage if you can handle the added chaos to the camera and boss patterns.

Everyone’s having so much fun that I had to join in myself!

Awarding myself the Hello Popopo! badge for completing Spring Breeze mode in Superstar. Unfortunately don’t have the original for my GBC so this will have to do! Very cozy Saturday afternoon playthrough. It’s a game of appropriate length and difficulty for me right now as well, since I have a three-week-old and a two-year-old, neither of whom are keen on sleeping these days. 😅

Right now I’m not even having luck unlocking the part time ufo level for the challenge(the everything in condition is brutal)
Edit: brutal but unlocked

@Chaotic Neutral for Be My Guest!

Might see if I can give Kirby's Dream Land a quick playthrough tonight, but started a playthrough of Kirby's Adventure since that's one of my favorites. I've never gotten too far into Dream Course, so may do that one as well.

edit: I also did Hello, Popopo!

It was fun to give the old GBC a spin again, though I did have to stay crazy close to a lamp to see everything lol.

  • Your first Kirby game?
Bit foggy on that, most likely either Nightmare in Dreamland or Air Ride, definitely remember spending hours and hours on City Trial.
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
Star Allies, Robobobobobot, Air Ride, Super Star and Return to Dream Land, and honestly Triple Deluxe is probably up there as well if I replayed it, the RtD-SA saga is the peak of what I love about Kirby.
  • Your fave soundtrack / song?
Favorite soundtrack is definitely Rainbow Curse, I think Kirby as a whole has pretty solid to great music, but in Rainbow Curse all of it is consistently great, do wish they would do another one like that, the instrumentation is pretty different from the rest of the series. My favorite track from that game is definitely rocket Kirbo.

  • Your fave copy ability?
Probably Staff from Star Allies, Fighter is also up there, love the abilities with a very versatile move set.
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros.?
Terry, powa wave.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game?
For another 3D game, I would prefer it to lean fully on its action elements, I wasn't a fan of the low ability count of Forgotten Land, and the upgrade system isn't anything new, so the nerfed moveset was a downer. So if they focused on just fleshing out the movesets again in 3D, with a decent number of abilities, on top of the timed dodges and limited flutter, it could become something like a full fledged entry level character action game like DMC or Bayonetta, and I would be pretty hyped for that. And of course keep making the 2D games for the platformer action hybrid. Also Air Ride 2, just give me Air Ride 2.

Working on playing through Super Kirby Clash, never really touched this Switch port so i'm getting the opportunity now. The grind is real but i'm getting super close to the end, five story missions left. Saving replaying Kirby's Adventure for my last challenge because it just feels right. Will answer the questions now though just to contribute in the meantime:
  • Your first Kirby game?
Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy! Was my first Kirby game but was also the only one I owned for a long while before Super Star Ultra on DS. Speaking of-
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
Super Star (Ultra)! Going from the original to this with some experiences of Kirby in Smash in-between was wild. Great game no matter where you play it, Ultra is a faithful remake that only adds more on top. Really wish they give the sub-game format another honest go; Kirby GCN was going to, but that was of course cancelled.
  • Your fave soundtrack / song?
Also Super Star, lol. It's a soundtrack made for the Super Famicom's hardware and it just has too many catchy tunes to count. Planet Robobot and now Forgotten Land are second and third place respectively (also how i'd rank them as games overall, funnily enough).
  • Your fave copy ability?
Too many to pick from! Hammer, Yo-Yo, Wing, Mirror and Staff are definitely up there at least.
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?
Banjo & Kazooie; the plush Kazooie is just too cute.

SSBU_Banjo-Kazooie_Kirby.jpg

  • Your dream for the next Kirby game?
Another 3D installment that itterates on Forgotten Land the same way Planet Robobot itterated on Triple Deluxe. A sequel to Dream Course would be great fun too; or just another fun non-action spin-off for Kirby.

Great to see another event on the go - thanks totofogo for running this! I've been working on these for the past few days and so have a bunch to claim - then Kirby and the Forgotten Land will hopefully be my last one, a little way down the line (currently up to world five).

That was my first time through Kirby's Adventure and it's very impressive for such an early game (Kirby's only NES outing) - I'm glad to have been given teh impetus to play it! My mini-write-up:

My first time with this early game in the Kirby franchise, Kirby's Adventure is really very impressive for an NES game and holds up well to this day, a very playable game and an enjoyable few hours. Graphics are colourful and expressive throughout, while some of the classic musical themes of the franchise show up here and are just as catchy as they always have been. The gameplay is where the game shines, though, particularly with the highly innovative introduction of the copy ability system, where Kirby absorbs the powers of enemies who he swallows to provide him with a wide range of different attacks - and which also serve as the means to explore many of the game's rewardingly-hidden secrets.

Despite the generally quite low difficulty level, there are still come decently challenging segments. Even without those, the boss encounters that conclude each of the game's seven worlds are particularly great fun to play through, being just as innovative as the ability system - while a bonus unlockable "VS boss" mode (one of several available) allows each access to these and greater replayability.

Endure the Pain (Kirby's Adventure - NES / NSO)

This file is from 1993.

The other 2 are from my kids circa 2022.

My start and select buttons do not work very well on this controller, making it very hard to get rid of copy powers without getting hit lol.

Because of this, I was unable to pull off my standard practice of getting throw from the sun and moon boss. I am ashamed.

Decided to pull out my GBC again for Link's Awakening, which is one of my favorite GB games. I hadn't played Dream Course aside from briefly trying it on the SNES Classic mini, so that was pretty fun figuring out how that worked. Kirby's Adventure's boss rush isn't that bad if you've played through the game a few times. Smash took me a few tries, I kept dying on Marx, and I didn't have any tickets.

In case anyone here isn’t aware, NSO is giving out weekly Kirby avatar icons to celebrate Forgotten Lands release! The new set includes a puffed up Kirby that is great.

Closing out my Sunday with some great cave offensive and a nap.

Happy May 1st everyone! Prize announcement coming soon 👀🌸

Prizes have been revealed, happy official event month!

Gotcha a Sur-prize!

Prizes.png

There are two different prizes up for grabs!

1. Normal Prize: Three lucky winners will have a choice between two HAL-developed eShop titles: Part-Time UFO and BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! (eShop digital download)!

2. Super Prize: Two extra lucky winners will have a choice between the two mainline Kirby Switch titles: Kirby Star Allies and Kirby and the Forgotten Land (eShop digital download)!

At the conclusion of the event, a raffle will open. Based on your performance in the event, you will be given up to three (3) tickets to enter: one ticket per tier that you completed a challenge in. So, the only way to get 3 tickets is to complete challenges across all three of the tiers. Your additional entries will give you a greater chance of winning, but you can only win once. If you happen to win both prizes, you will be given a choice between the two options and your other "win" will be re-rolled to another participant.

Hey @Chaotic Neutral
Just posting the ones I've done: Hello Popopo! And Floating Below Par

I'll try others soon. Too bad I already sold my physical copy of Link's Awekening, otherwise I could have done another one.
BTW is it hard to solo Super Kirby Clash? This is a game no friend of mine wanted to try :B

Trying the smash challenge but it's kicking my ass, I'm so terrible at fighting games. I managed to get to Dedede in the hardest difficulty, but I can't get past him. Any tips?

I cleared some challenges last night and I wanted to ask in this thread about uploading images. Last time I used Imgur, but that makes a huge blocky thing appear.

I was recommended Abload De last time, but that’s in German. Is there an English setting if you download the app? Or is it easier on the website?

I’ve also heard you can make a Discord server. I already have the app and an account, so is it really as easy as just making one in the app with the big plus button? Do you have to pay anything or is it all handled on their end? Do you just upload images on a chat at that point and get a link somehow or is there some specific set up you need to do to make it work?

Sorry for asking, but I really want to learn how to use the message board properly.

Imgur works if you open the image itself in a new tab, copy the URL of the image, then paste it into the image tag thingie here. That's the way I do it and they post clean.

Oh this is neat. Will give a reason to finally play through Kirby's Adventure, which I've been meaning to do for years.

I owned Fun Pak as a kid and played through it who knows how many times, so ran through Great Cave Offensive this afternoon since I still remember where most of the treasures are.

Hello, Popopo! challenge down @Chaotic Neutral

Boy was that a trip down memory lane and absolutely worth digging out the hardware for. Amazing how long we all put up with that little LCD screen's ghosting 😱 But man, connecting a good pair of headphones is such an aural delight. Especially for a game like this with catchy tunes.

Next up is the Endure the Pain! challenge since I have an NSO save I've been working on when I get the urge since the start which is now on the last world. Should be doable before end of the month.

And before I forget, here's answers to some of the prompts in the OP

Your fave soundtrack / song?
I would probably have to go with the Float Islands theme. It's so chill, and they then chilled it out even further for the Smash Bros. All-Star mode save room

Your fave copy ability?
Gonna have to go with Yo-yo or the upgraded PSI form because of the EarthBound reference. HAL boys gotta stick together.[/b]

My partner and I beat Kirby and the Forgotten Land 100% this weekend. Great game! I'll post about it sometime in the ST. That makes A New World: Conquered!

And to distract myself from...well, the continued upending of human rights in the United States, to put it bluntly, I also dragged out the Virtual Console version of Link's Awakening (my partner currently has my Switch copy) to complete Is That Really You?

20220503-001351.jpg

This was a file I completed long ago. I almost forgot how cumbersome the item switching mechanics are. It was cute to see the cameos in this dungeon again, though!

The final Parallel Nightmare fight was giving underleveled 'ol me some grief, so I went and took out my frustration by going to beat Kirby's Adventure and the original Nightmare; then I beat him again in the boss rush for the Endure the Pain challenge. @Chaotic Neutral

L4chmMj.jpg

Hope i'll be able to finish the Super Kirby Clash grind by the end of the week; i'm trying it solo and while managable, i've been really tempted to sin and buy one of the microtransactions to get through this quicker. Haven't given in yet though!

I cleared out five of the challenges! I had 100%ed Kirby and the Forgotten Land before the event started and last night I started a replay of Kirby Super Star and wrapped up Spring Breeze, Gourmet Race, Dynablade and The Great Cave Offensive. I mentioned in a prior post Kirby Super Star is my all time favorite Kirby game so I was glad this event encouraged a replay. I'm looking forward to wrapping it up with Meta Knight's Revenge, Milky Way Wishes, and the Arena later tonight! I'm pretty sure the question got added later, but yes Kirby Super Star has my favorite OST and my favorite track is probably Meta Knight's Revenge. It's so upbeat and exciting! Even though that already completed one challenge in each tier I really wanted to challenge clearing 9.9 with Kirby in Smash Bros and I did it on my first try with careful play! I love that Marx is his final boss! Finally, I was happy to have a great excuse here to boot up Part Time UFO so I stacked up all of those Kirby plushies too! It's an amazing game more people need to check out!

Anyway here is my photo proof! @Chaotic Neutral ! Thanks again @chocolate_supra for helping my pictures look nice on here!

Behind badges on your badge page there are little semi-transparent megaphone icons. By pressing them you feature them on your profile, up to four at a time. The megaphone should turn red and then you can un-feature a badge by clicking the red icon again.

So after we reported clearing the challenge, we don't need to do anything to run for the prize, right?

Not that I realistically expect to beat the smash challenge, but just in case lol

No, nothing that needs to be done unless people want to opt out! I'll add the names into the pot when I award the badges. Just, as usual, to let me know if the badge hasn't been awarded after a day or two, just in case I've missed a badge claim post. :)

@Chaotic Neutral here's my confirmation for "world famous treasure hunter"

I'd only ever put serious time into ultra before, not the original. The game seems extra zoomed in to me, but it lets them do some nice chunky enemy sprites. I will say that I greatly prefer the world of amazing mirror to the great cave, but that seems unfair given it's only a small part of this package, and the cave doesn't seem to have the same interconnected world goal. Overall it's still a fun Kirby time.

I agree. I found the first part ridiculously hard. The two star challenge at least has that flat piece that helps out with stacking the next set of games.
The advice I found all sucked too, starting with the chicks actually makes it hardwr

I didn't even think of using the table thing until I saw someone else here use it. I literally had all but two plushies stacked without it during one of my tries. I thought the table thing was there to make grabbing certain plushies annoying.

I really wish I could have gotten those last two without using the table thing though. lol

Cave three down tonight, one to go! If my experience with the buddy mechanic here is anything to go off of, I don’t think I’ll be a big fan of star allies lol. Luckily the rewind feature got me around most of my frustrations, plus having a checklist up for treasures on my ipad.

I almost always play Super Star in co-op so I forgot how bad the AI can be. That said, I also had my greatest Kirby AI moment of all time this playthrough as I had a GIM (Yo Yo partner) go ballistic on the Halberd reactor core’s gun. The moment the fight started the GIM just rushed in there and started perpetually spinning on the gun (the dash move) and just melted it. I’ve never thought perpetually spinning was possible.

I didn't realize it when I first played it, but Super Star Ultra letting you just drop your power if you didn't want to make a helper is the secret best change Ultra made. Going back to Super Star SNES, it's kind of annoying how you have to make a helper if you want to let your ability go. Like sure, you can create the helper and then immediately despawn it, but that slows the pace down. Outside of a few puzzles, Ultra can be played without helpers forced onto you, and it feels great.

Of course, when I was a kid, I'd usually make a helper because I liked Kirby having a little buddy to tag along with him!

Might as well post some of my progress so far. Beat Kirby's Adventure tonight so the next step is to beat the boss rush.
