Kirby Turned Thirty! Community Game Event May 2022

Kirby turned 30… today! The world met the pink puffball when Kirby’s Dream Land released on April 27, 1992 in Japan, and later on August 1st in NA, 3rd in PAL. Since then, he’s been the star of over 30 games between his mainline platformers and spin-offs! Mario may be Nintendo’s main guy, but Kirby deserves a spotlight too - so here we go!

Dreams of Events Past

Before we get tiltin’ and tumblin’ here, I’d be remiss not to give @Dopply, @Chaotic Neutral and @WestEgg their flowers maxim tomatoes for kicking these Community Game Events off last year! If you missed them or are new here, there have been three so far:
These events brought a huge smile to my face when I first joined the fami, and I am proud to carry the torch star rod forward after a brief hiatus! There’s just one final matter of business to take care of before we begin– how’d that last event go?

Well, there were 15 Challenges to complete, and none of them went uncompleted! Each challenge is associated with a badge, which you may see users rocking under their avatars. If you want to learn more, check out the Badges Page to learn more about all the challenges and winners of past events.

Plus, there was a raffle open to anyone who completed a challenge! @xghost777, @Suswave, @Pineapple, @Kitty Paws, @Brock Reiher, and myself (@totofogo) each took home a digital copy of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Pokémon Shining Pearl, or Shin Megami Tensei V! Congrats to all! You can learn more about past site raffles on the Closed Raffles Page.

The Challenge Colosseum

This time around, we’ve got a grand total of 10 challenges for you fine folks! In classic Kirby fashion, they may start off simple – but don’t let that fool you! The true challenges await in the later tiers thanks to the expert mind of our resident Puffball Enthusiast @MondoMega.

Badge-Spread.png

I asked to host this event in a bit of a selfish move. See, Forgotten Land absolutely blew my dang mind and after beating it I promised myself I’d dive into the depths of the 30 years of magic that led up to it. Putting this event together is holding me accountable to that, and this couldn’t be a better month for it since there’s no new first party release scheduled for May!

Kirby has quite a fine showing on Switch thanks to NSO and cameos in other games, so I focused on Switch-accessible titles in order to be inclusive + accessible to as many folks as possible.

Tier 1 Badges

Tier 1: The Arena
  • Hello, Popopo! (Kirby's Dream Land - Game Boy & SNES / NSO)
Beat King Dedede and recover Dream Land's stolen food in Kirby's debut title! Did you know that this game was originally titled 'Twinkle Popo', with Kirby going by the name Popopo? If necessary this challenge can also be completed in Kirby Superstar in the abbreviated ‘Spring Breeze’ mode, though we recommend playing the original to get the authentic experience sans-copy ability!
  • Is That Really You? (The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Game Boy & Nintendo Switch)
Rumor has it that Kirby has been spotted attacking the inhabitants of Koholint Island; but could that really be true? Head to the Eagle's Tower dungeon and take down any pink puffball you find inside.

  • Floating Below Par (Kirby's Dream Course - SNES / NSO)
Get a gold medal on Course 1 in the single-player mode! Once you've learned the basics you'll just need to get a par of 14 or under to score your sweet reward.
Tier 2 Badges

Tier 2: Soul Melter
  • World-Famous Treasure Hunter (Kirby Super Star - SNES / NSO & Nintendo DS)
Help Kirby collect all 60 treasures and return to the surface in the 'The Great Cave Offensive' sub-game. You know, for some reason a few of those hidden treasures look awfully familiar...

  • Be My Guest! (Kirby Star Allies - Nintendo Switch)
Clear the 'Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!' sub-game as any character in under an hour! Here's a tip: you might have an easier time if you use one of the Dream Friends that joined this adventure after launch.

  • Kirby’s Part-Time Jobski (Part-Time UFO - Nintendo Switch)
Clear all three challenges on the Two Star version of Toy Shop 2. It'll take a lot of skill and patience to properly stack up all of those adorable Kirby plushies!

  • Endure the Pain (Kirby's Adventure - NES / NSO)
After saving Dream Land from an endless nightmare, take on the ‘V.S. Boss!’ challenge and come out victorious! All of these bosses are raring for one more go at you, so show them no mercy! The SP Version on NSO is not allowed here, you've gotta beat the game yourself first! Tho, if you need some extra support keep in mind that the Famicom + 3D Classics versions both heal mid-way.
Tier 3 Badges

Tier 3: Ultimate Cup Z
  • Super Kirby RPG (Super Kirby Clash - Nintendo Switch)
Clear 'The True Final Battle' and save the Dream Kingdom once and for all! This title is free-to-play, so everybody can give this challenge a try; maybe bring along a friend or three to help!

  • Can You Handle the Heat? (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Nintendo Switch)
Complete Kirby's Classic Mode route 'Gourmet Clash' on Intensity 9.9. It's only natural that the idea of combining Kirby's simplicity with fighting games was inspiration behind Smash; both series were created by Masahiro Sakurai!

  • A New World: Conquered (Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch)
Get 100% completion in Kirby's newest entry and first foray into 3D - Kirby and the Forgotten Land! It'll take a lot of work, but Kirby believes in you! This challenge can be considered completed even if completed before the start of the event.

  • Drifting Away (Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - N64 (NSO)
Speed run time! Kirby 64 just dropped on NSO and we're celebrating with an additional challenge at the 11th hour. Get 100% and the true ending to claim this final badge. Unfortunately, it looks like there may be some... unique challenges ahead of you in this run. What's a Switch port without a little extra drift?

Gotcha a Sur-prize!

Prizes.png

There are two different prizes up for grabs!

1. Normal Prize: Three lucky winners will have a choice between two HAL-developed eShop titles: Part-Time UFO and BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! (eShop digital download)!

2. Super Prize: Two extra lucky winners will have a choice between the two mainline Kirby Switch titles: Kirby Star Allies and Kirby and the Forgotten Land (eShop digital download)!

At the conclusion of the event, a raffle will open. Based on your performance in the event, you will be given up to three (3) tickets to enter: one ticket per tier that you completed a challenge in. So, the only way to get 3 tickets is to complete challenges across all three of the tiers. Your additional entries will give you a greater chance of winning, but you can only win once. If you happen to win both prizes, you will be given a choice between the two options and your other "win" will be re-rolled to another participant.

The actual completion process is the same as usual. Per @Chaotic Neutral 's instructions last time around…

For the duration of the event, which is until May 31 midnight at GMT/UTC, you can complete the event challenges, related to the event's theme and laid out in this OP, to earn badges on the board, which you can then feature on your profile and posts. After successfully completing the challenge, post the proof of your accomplishment in this thread (video or image evidence) and indicate which challenge you went for, while @-ing @Chaotic Neutral in the post. Awarding the badges is a manual process, and they can only do the honours when at leisure and by the computer, so you might have to wait patiently for the badge to show up! Then, later on, successful badge-holders will be awarded the opportunity to enter a raffle for prizes, details TBD.

Good luck, Poyo!

That’s all folks! To close us out, here’s a little Q+A that you can feel free to copy and paste at your leisure to share a bit about your here-to-now with Kirby! Please do feel free to use this thread to discuss any and all things Kirby’s 30th too, No need to limit to just the challenge!

What is...
  • Your first Kirby game?
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
  • Your fave soundtrack / song?
  • Your fave copy ability?
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game?

Graphics all created by yours truly with images sourced mostly from the official Kirby site + Kirby Wiki. Huge thanks once again to @Dopply and @WestEgg for getting these off the ground last year and @Chaotic Neutral for his support in allowing me to continue the fun. One additional super-sized thanks goes to @MondoMega for being our resident Kirby expert and helping craft the challenges… I’m excited to dig into them myself! From the game knowledge needed to pick them to the clever fact-filled descriptions– they absolutely killed it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s adventures in Dream Land and beyond! - @totofogo

lol sorry for making that other thread, i didn't know this was gonna be posted now. happy birthday kirby!

and @totofogo excellent job on making this all happen

I just started playing Dream Course yesterday! It took awhile to get the controls down but I at least made it through a couple courses without hitting a game over. Gonna try for that course 1 gold medal when I have the time!

does it count as finishing a challenge for this event if i did it earlier this month?
goty tbqh. i can't see the playtime right now (started 7 days ago) but based on where it's landed in games sorted by play time, it took 25-30 hours.

Nope start over Given the nature of that challenge I’d say it’s worth making the exception for! :)

Quick question, do we have to complete a tier 1 challenge in order to a attempt a tier 2 challenge, and a tier 2 challenge in order to attempt a tier 3 challenge, or are those just difficulty tiers?

Just difficulty tiers and a little flavor on the setup for now - no need to follow any specific order!

Yoooooooo, you did a great job with this, @totofogo! I'm really looking forward to this event. Don't think I can get all of the challenges, but I got a few of them on my eye. I think at least half of them are doable. Maybe go really hard and get all of the Ultimate Cup Z challenges done. Anyone up for teaming up to take down Super Kirby Clash? I'm still really far behind in that one.

Let's answer these questions!
  • Your first Kirby game? - Kirby's Dream Land. My uncle found me a used copy when I was, like, 4, and I played it a bunch on my Game Boy Color. It was one of the few Nintendo franchises I knew before j saw it in Smash Bros. 64 - the others were Mario and Pokémon.
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)? - In no particular order: Adventure, Super Star Ultra, Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, and Forgotten Land.
  • Your fave copy ability? - Hammer. Power and utility in one convenient package.
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros? - It feels wrong for me to say anything other than Mario Kirby. But there's so many other good ones. Steve Kirby is probably the one that comes to mind first.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game? - They amazingly ticked off two of them with Forgotten Land: a 3D game and a game in an abandoned environment. I'd say leave this one to HAL, they'll have my benefit of the doubt.

Nice ! Couldn't wait for the next badge challenges !

What is...
  • Your first Kirby game?
The very first one, Kirby's Dreamland on GameBoy ! Along with Kirby Pinball on Gameboy too. They were my sister's games, so once I was grown enough to hold a Gameboy, I played them ! Kirby's Dreamland, for the longest time, was the only game I was able to complete. (Beyond some mediocre Sesame Street game on GBC in which it was almost impossible to lose lol)
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
Use to be Planet Robobot... Now it's probably Forgotten Land ! Both are spectacular, fun, with varied and interesting level designs and gimmicks.
  • Your fave copy ability?
UFO ! For more classic ones, water, grass, sword, psy...
In Forgotten Land, it's sword too. Especially with the last two upgrades.
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?
Joker. Kirby with a glock is so fun. Design wise, I love Terry, Banjo-Kazooie (the lil Kazooie plush is so cute)... And many others.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game ?
Forgotten Land was a near perfect Kirby game. In just one iteration of the new formula, they already make a Planet Robobot tier Kirby game. So I hope they'll keep the good work, I trust HAL anyway, they always deliver great games. (Yes, even Star Allies was great, never understood why so many people dislike that one !)

My main hope is that this time it won't just all take place on a single planet. I like how Kirby 64 made you travel from planets to planets, Star Allies did that too. Also, I hope we'll get playable Dedede/Meta Knight/Bandana Dee and have a secondary mode in which we play the game with them. Really weird how there wasn't a solo Bandana Dee mode in Forgotten Land !

This is my first time playing Kirby's Dream Course, and I can see my putting in this isn't any better than it is in Mario Golf 64.
It has always been on my list to play, I think I even purchased it back on the Wii U on some sort of sale and played for a bit. Now’s the time!

  • Your first Kirby game? - I borrowed Kirby's Dream Land from a friend on GB back in the day. I remember not liking it much and didn't finish it.
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)? - Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The only Kirby game I completed and loved 😍
  • Your fave copy ability? - The Sword!!!
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros? - N/A - I don't play Smash bros.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game? - I can't wait for DLC and sequels for Forgotten land! In the meantime I will give a shot at the Kirby games on NSO.

This is just all kinds of awesome. I love to see it!

  • Your first Kirby game?
While I did dip my toes here and there in the SNES games and Epic Yarn growing up, my first proper Kirby game that I played and enjoyed was Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. (Which is the name I like to use) It's a game that I have a personal connection to. I spent a lot of the summer of 2015 in a psych ward. Life was looking dark, and pretty much my only light in a very grim mental state was my Wii U, who, unlike me, had a phenomenal 2015. I'd go for permission on weekends, and took the few batches of money I had left to buy and play Splatoon and Kirby. Rainbow Curse hooked me right away with its charm, wholesome vibes and gorgeous aesthetic. While I never completed it, I will always remember it.

  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
Rainbow Curse, while having a special place in my heart, do have cracks in its design. So I have to say Forgotten Land on this question, because Forgotten Land was just mindblowingly good. Like, firing on all cylinders good. Galaxy brain levels of good. Cultural reset. It's also a special game to me, because talking about it was the last thing I did together with my best friend.
  • Your fave copy ability?
The fully upgraded Ranger ability in Forgotten Land was something I used to completely obliterate the final boss. It's an amazing, amazing ability.

  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?
While I never tried it out in Ultimate, I just have to really fall in love with Minecraft Kirby. It's too good to be true.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game?
I have no clue. Forgotten Land delivered on all of my dreams, and then some.

Btw, since this is a soft-launch - if anyone has any feedback on the challenges or badges before May 1st please feel free to holler here in the thread or DM me!

Not sure as I have never played the version, but is the great cave offensive the same in Super Star Ultra? I don’t see DS listed as one of the platforms on it (I will always go to bat for the DS, so want it to always be included if possible).

Sorry for paying dust to Air Ride and Mass Attack, amongst others. Blame Nintendo for not porting them to Switch!!

Ah, true! Does anyone know how that version compares and if it’s still a fair/realistic challenge? (@MondoMega perhaps)

They're effectively the same. Some treasures have been changed, mostly to add/update references, but the treasure locations, number of treasures, final money amount for all treasures, and level design are identical between both versions. I'd say playing either should be eligible for the challenge.

Sold. Thanks!

Just cycling through a few of the challenge games listed here, turns out I never got very far in Star Allies, so this event is a perfect excuse to finally go back and beat that, even if I don't complete the 1 hour challenge in the next month, it'll be worth it.

You did a great job with this. It makes me very happy to see the challenge tradition continue without my direct involvement.

Amazing job @totofogo! The OP looks good enough to eat!

Maybe I can complete a few of these challenges? I really want the badges... lol.

For now I guess it's onto questions:

What is...

  • Your first Kirby game?
I got Kirby's Adventure as a gift one year for Christmas. It was one of only four NES games we ever owned, and it was the first game I ever completed! Getting to Dedede and then having the true threat suddenly emerge is the expectation for Kirby games nowadays, but back then my mind was blown when the Nightmare battle suddenly began. This game made me a Kirby fan for life. Even if there were no other great Kirby games(but lucky for us, there are many!), I'd still love the series for Adventure's sake alone.
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
It's probably Forgotten Land right now, and I could name a bunch of them(Adventure obvs), but I think I'm going to give Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards the nod here because I feel like it was a little unfairly judged at the time of it's release for not being a true 3D game, when that's what was expected of new games on the N64/PlayStation. I really enjoyed the ability combination system in that game, and this particular version of Kirby's soundtrack is probably the one that gets hummed to in my mind the most. That industrial snow factory level song is just incredible.
  • Your fave copy ability?
Oh hands down the UFO ability! I was obsessed with getting and maintaining that power for as long as possible when playing Kirby's Adventure as a kid. That said I really love the feel of using the Yo-yo power in SuperStar as well.
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?
Best visual is totally Minecraft Kirby. It's too dang funny. That said, I love grizzled little Snake Kirby and cheeky little Bayonetta Kirby almost just as much.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game?
I'm honestly really hoping they take another stab at a puzzle-y non-adventure Kirby game again, something along the lines of Dream Course, Canvas Curse, or Tilt-N-Tumble. Forgotten Land has been such an absolute joy to experience personally speaking, jumping right up into my top 3 Switch games, and I'd love to now see some more experimental stuff.

Whatever happens next tho, it's just good to see the series in such a strong place. Here's to another 30yrs!

This is a really good mix of badges. I've been wanting to get into some more Kirby after playing Planet Robobot and Forgotten Land back-to-back.

I've been thinking about doing The Great Cave Offensive again because I haven't done it in years and it still might be my favorite of anything Kirby, which is high praise from me because there are a lot of things I like about Kirby games. This gives me a good reason to go for it.

  • Your first Kirby game? Kirby's Dream Land
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?Kirby 64, Planet Robobot, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Kirby tilt and tumble, Kirby Star Stacker, Kirby Pinball ( to name a few)
  • Your fave copy ability? the fridge from 64
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros? Bayonetta, just too stylish in that hair
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game? I'm down for whatever they make, but I would like to see some sort of RPG
Also, nice thread for Kirby! I should be able to do some challenges later.

I'll submit all the ones i've got saved screenshots of on my Switch for now, lol. I'll get around to the rest of the challenges throughout the month of course, but this should be good for now @Chaotic Neutral

One question about the Kirby's Adventure challenge though @totofogo; should certain versions of Kirby's Adventure be disqualified from the challenge? Specifcally the 3D Classics port on 3DS and the SP Version on NSO; the former has a health refill that the original doesn't include, and the latter starts you with a completed save so you can immediately start the boss rush. Latter just depends on if you want beating the game first to be part of the challenge.

Damn. Putting in work! I was going to play the 3D version and didn’t know that this had a health refill. Does NSO distinguish the SP versions in any way other than the title screen? Not sure anyone could tell other than by honor system.

Good question!
  • Since it’s in the Soul Melter section I’d say we should disqualify the 3D Classics version
  • Given the wording I’d say we should honor system (+1 @Barely Able) against the SP Version on NSO

@MondoMega do you think Spring Breeze from Superstar is a fair sub for the Dream Land challenge? I know it’s abbreviated but I wasn’t sweating it since it’s in the first tier + wanted to make it Switch accessible.

They have a large SP banner on the side of the screen so it'd definitely be identifiable (unless the image is cropped).

I think that's fair enough even with it being shorter and easier. I'll be playing the original for the challenge myself but it should be allowed so all 10 challenges can be completed on Switch.

Challenges have been updated to reflect both points!

  • Your first Kirby game?
Kirby's Dream Land 2. I borrowed this from a friend when I was younger and spent a lot of time with it. I don't remember if I ever got 100% completion but it was the first game I ever tried to put that amount of effort in. I remember spending so much time with Rick, Kine, and Coo and trying different copy abilitiy combinations to unlock secret areas.
  • Your fave Kirby game(s)?
Hmm this one is tough. Recency bias might make this Forgotten Land! If I had to rule that one out, it'd have to be either Dream Course or Kirby 64. I know 64 is incredibly slow but combining copy abilities still feels great to this day.
  • Your fave copy ability?
I really love copy abilities that still let me have a sense of movement. I'd probably have to go with spider or wheel on this one!
  • Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?
Almost definitely Bayonetta.
  • Your dream for the next Kirby game?
I really loved the change to the formula with Forgotten Land and wouldn't hate to see a direct sequel with a similar formula that includes different copy abilities. I'd also really love for a cool multiplayer Kirby game again, like Air Ride, Dream Course, or the minigames in 64.

Excited for this challenge @totofogo! Glad you and @MondoMega organized and planned it! I already did Kirby FL 100% and I’ll post proof and tag Chaotic Neutral after I tackle another one. I’m 100% doing The Great Cave Offensive since that’s my favorite Kirby thing ever.

I’ll do the Q&A for now

What is...

Your first Kirby game?

My brother had an old Game Boy with both Kirby’s Dream Land and Kirby’s Dream Land 2 so I grew up early with those two. My Kindergarten weirdly had an SNES with Super Star and I asked my parents for Super Star at some point.

Your fave Kirby game(s)?

Kirby Super Star is my all time favorite. I’ve played that game countless times and always have an absolute blast with it. Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby’s Air Ride are my other two favorites.

Your fave copy ability?

Mirror! Excellent damage and perfect defense that even damages foes! The dash move where you split in two is rad. Plasma is number two and maybe Water is third? UFO is pretty good too.

Your fave copy ability in Smash Bros?

This is tough since I rarely play Kirby in Ultimate. Just too many great characters these days! Shulk and Captain Falcon came first to mind, but there’s a lot of great choices!

Your dream for the next Kirby game?

I want to see both a Metroidvania Kirby game again and a Forgotten Land sequel. I’ve been thinking how cool it would be to have a Metroidvania submode inside a Forgotten Land sequel to get both at once!

Rough auto translation

Today "Kirby of the Stars" is 30 years old.
Please continue to get along!

The first Kirby clear dance.
At the time of development, when I asked the person in charge of sound about the number of frames of clear music, he said, "I don't know."
I made it according to the sound while rewinding the clear music recorded on the cassette tape many times.

And on that note as demonstrated - please do feel free to use this thread to discuss any and all things Kirby’s 30th too! No need to limit to just the challenge :)

You’re speaking my language! I’d love to see them explore that as an eshop game even, since there’s not much to go off of from the Forgotten Land mini games imo in the style of their 3DS “plus’ versions.

Yeah when we first saw Forgotten Land and we didn’t know exactly what it was, open world or course style, I definitely was thinking about the possibility of it being a Metroidvania Kirby game. If they stayed within the town with the abandoned mall that would have been a great setting for one.

Super happy with what we got to be clear, but yeah a lot of potential. I’d love to see more eshop games in general (beyond just Kirby) so yeah like a 2 to 3 hour Metroidvania Kirby game on the eshop built off Forgotten Land would be awesome!
