StarTopic Dragon Ball (movie/television/manga/etc.) series |ST| 'ight, let's just drag-on the wait

I couldn't think of a better sub-title for the ST; forgive me, fellow Familiars.

Anyways, until we get a new Dragon Ball Super season (if we're getting one and not an entirely new series?) we'll have to wait for DBS:SH, or Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (haha, inb4 we have another redundant joke about its redundant name at the Department of Redundancy Department).

(On another note, apparently Broly is also in this one...)

Anyway, here's what we have recently:

And this is what I could find in terms of news:

Actually, in other news, they seem to have "delayed" the movie to some other time (which was originally supposed to be April 22, at least in Japan). They even updated one of the trailers for this from "Coming April" to "Coming Soon."

More info here in the following article:

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Shares Updated Trailer After Release Delay [Link]

So, err, yeah, let's drag-on things even more, haha.

I am excited though and I did enjoy Dragon Ball Super so I'll definitely be looking forward to the newest movie, especially after how much I enjoyed Broly.

Anyways, share your thoughts or discuss whatever, ig

Have fun.

Dragon Ball is my favorite media franchise but the Super era has been disappointing overall for reasons I won't bore you with but you can probably ascertain.

I'm not sure what to think of the new movie, I'm hoping it's good obviously and a Gohan-centric story is a nice change of pace but it's hard to say. If there's an option to watch it subtitled in Japanese in theaters I'll probably go see it, if not I dunno.

I'm happy that Gohan is back to being relevant. No more of that school boy BS.
No.

We need more Saiyaman and Schoolboy BS.

I hope he skips the final fight of the movie so he can go to his business meeting or some shit like a good hard-working adult should to provide for his family and friends.

"You got this, Pops!"

I kinda hope the movie just expands upon the stuff Super had been building, where Gohan is really just a goofy nerd at heart but understands he needs to stay in shape to protect his family and friends. I've got no problem with Saiyaman stuff, I just want him to be able to step up when it counts. He could, if written properly, be a great examination of 'with great power comes great responsibility.' I know writing anyone properly is a big ask for Dragon Ball, but still.

Plus Gohan as a powerful, capable but reluctant fighter provides a nice counterbalance to Goku and Vegeta's unhealthy obsessions with self-improvement and pride respectively.

(yes, I'm a Gohan stan)

Yeah.

Also, I am genuinely a huge Saiyaman fan (a Saiyafan!)

I also like that Chichi is a Saiyafan too.

But aside from that, yeah, I like Gohan and I have warmed up to him despite his fanbase (of which I'm apart of, admittedly).

Plus, we'll be sure to get more Piccolo!

Which is always fine in my book.

So yes, I'm a Gohan stan; I'm also a Stannis Baratheon stan, but we don't have to talk about that!

(Heheh, StanStan...)

Gohan being relevant is great
I'm happy they aged up Trunks and Goten (also that photo of them "fusing" is such a troll seeing that their fingers don't match up meaning their fusion is gonna fail and they are probably saving Teen Gotenks for another time).
I really hope the rumors of Cell being back is true.
I like the idea that Pan will go Super Saiyan at her early age as it completely eliminates the existence of GT for good.
And I still hate the art style especially after DBS: Broly gave us the perfect art style and blend of traditional hand drawn animation and CG.

I hope they connect and redo the ending of Z already with Uub and we can continue on from there.

Also we really need Cooler to return with a new updated storyline and become canon alongside Freeza's race. (Freeza movie starring solely him against his more powerful brother would be awesome).

Am I allowed to talk about the artstyle? Is it gonna be incendiary? 😅

I share your disappointment with the movie going CGI after Broly was one of (if not the) best-looking DragonBall entries ever. I'm hoping it's just because of covid goofing up pipelines and that this won't be the norm going forward. I was really upset about it at first but as I saw more footage and realized Gohan would finally be more of a focal point (and back in his Piccolo gi) like I've wanted for YEARS, I started warming up to the movie. Even if the animation isn't what I want, at least the story looks to be. Silver linings!

Definitely silver linings. I'm getting everything else I could want from the film character-wise.

But I will have to swallow a hard pill before watching this because there has not been one 2D-CG show I've ever liked outside Beastars where it makes since they went that route do to how complicated the characters would be to draw. That's what 2D-CG should be used for, moving complicated art designs or to use in the background. Dragon Ball ain't it.

Yeah that makes sense. There was a show I enjoyed called Hi-Score Girl that also went the cell-shaded CGI route, and the director (I think) said they made that choice deliberately so the show's animation would fit into the theme of it being about video games.
Except that, ya know, it took place in the 16-bit era where everything was 2D pixel art, so that doesn't quite track and I'm pretty sure they only said that to cover up what I assume was the real answer: "it's cheaper." But despite how much I enjoyed that show, I never really warmed to the animation.
Now to be faaaiiiir, I'm sure a lot of that could be attributed to my dislike of HSG's character designs in general, but DBS:SH at least has solid Toriyama designs so I might find it easier to turn off the critical side of my brain and enjoy the movie since the characters themselves won't be eyesores.

Remember when people thought that Trunks and Goten would never EVER be aged up to their proper height and adulthood?

Good times...

Goooood times...

I grew up watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami and was invested in it week to week. Every time they reset it back to episode 1 was painful as we waited for the story to continue. I had mixed feelings on the Cell arc with all of the villain shuffling, but the Buu arc being so dumb for me back then made me think maybe Dragon Ball wasn’t for me anymore. GT didn’t change my mind so for years I thought Dragon Ball was over for me. Never checked out the games either.

But then Dragon Ball FighterZ by my favorite fighting game developer, Arc System Works, was announced and everything changed. Knowing they would make nothing less than a quality game made me excited for Dragon Ball in a way I hadn’t been for years and the final game truly delivered. With the excitement for the game I checked out and caught up on Super as it was nearing the end of the Tournament of Power. I don’t really binge shows, but at some point I started watching like ten episodes a day and I was loving it. Dragon Ball was back in my life now and was here to stay. Dragon Ball Super Broly then was a victory lap at that point and was incredible to watch in theaters with my friends and my Dad (he used to watch DBZ with me each week).

It’s been weird Super has been gone for so long now right when it was at the peak of excitement, but I am looking forward to Dragon Ball Super Hero (even with crummy CG) and I recently started Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai the show that took over Dragon Ball Super’s spot in Japan. For the latter it may not be Dragon Ball, but the Akira Toriyama designs and excellent animation are filling in similar vibes. I hope after Super Hero and Dai both come and end we can get Dragonball back on TV again. I’ll be there day one this time and with a cool community here to share the journey with :)

This is really similar to my journey (except that I love the Cell Saga), but I agree the Buu Saga was baloney with chunks. Supper's Tournament of Power was when I felt the new series finally gained its footing after wobbly retreads of Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, and (for some reason) the Future Trunks stuff, but Tournament of Power just kicks ass. And Broly blew me away. First DB film I ever saw in theaters, and it was a packed house with people hooting and hollering every time someone transformed. It was like a religious experience. I hope DBS doesn't go away anytime soon.

Yeah the theater experience for Broly was amazing! Everyone was so hyped and it was my first Dragon Ball film in theaters too! For health concerns I’ll have to see how I feel when the time comes, but I’d love to see Super Hero in theaters if possible.

So, if I have this right, the voice-actor of Shenron and Garlic, Jr. in English, recently passed away.

All I can say is RIP. Quite sad.

News round-up:

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Director Has a Big Request for Fans

Dragon Ball Super will enter a new era when its next movie goes live, and despite a recent delay, fans are hyped to see how it goes down. It isn't every day the anime brings back the Red Ribbon Army, and the film will make history with its CG animation. Now, the movie's director is teasing fans with a special request once the movie goes live, and netizens will want to take his advice here.

The favor was asked over the weekend as Anime Japan got underway in Tokyo. It was there attendees were gifted promos about Dragon Ball Super featuring an interview with Tetsuro Kodama. It was there the director said the details in Dragon Ball Super make him proud, so he wants fans to pay close attention to them all.

"For this film, we have created detailed settings for accessories, costumes, vehicles, etc., which will make you say, 'Even these things have the RR mark?!'"

Continuing, the director asked audiences to keep their eyes wide open throughout the movie (via Chronicles). "I would be glad if you could pay attention to such details. Hope you enjoy the show!"

I like this! This movie is supposed to be detail-oriented compared to other Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Z projects! I like it!

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think this is a very exciting, well, detail.

But I will have to swallow a hard pill before watching this because there has not been one 2D-CG show I've ever liked outside Beastars where it makes since they went that route do to how complicated the characters would be to draw. It's funny because this is EXACTLY what someone like Cell would benefit most from. Complex design (thanks to all those dots~) that wouldn't need to be drawn over and over again per frame. Perhaps it'd be fitting if we bring Gohan's little "rehabilitation" arc full circle and have him face off against a new version of the RR's greatest threat, huh...?

Cell isn't a complex animation job though. Dots and complicated patterns are relatively easy to animate with modern animation programs. And even if they went the cheap route they could easily just have static patterns in traditional animation as a cop-out.

But I can't imagine the reason they went with this animation style would he solely for the most likely 10-15 minutes screen time of Cell.

Ummm

Dragon Ball Super Promo Sparks Theory About Broly's Children

Dragon Ball Super fans love a good theory, and the community is serving up some hot ones these days. It all comes ahead of the anime's next outing as all eyes are on Goku and Vegeta's comeback. It will not be long before Dragon Ball Super: Super Broly goes live, and one of its latest promos has some fans questioning Broly and Cheelai's future.

Or to be specific, they're curious about the size of their family. The friends were rather cozy in the anime's last film, and a group of theories suggests Cheelai and Broly might have a kid now.

Before you decide on this theory, you should know the basics. The whole thing went live when Anime Japan welcomed a new promo for Dragon Ball Super, and it featured Cheelai. The green alien was featured with Broly although they weren't side by side. While the Saiyan looks confused on his end, Cheelai looks please enough and looks to be carry a bag of sorts.

As you can see above, the bag is being held close to Cheelai's chest, and her posture has raised red flags with fans. Plenty of fans were quick to speculate the bag was really some sort of harness or blanket for a baby. After all, Cheelai is close with Broly, and she is one of the few people who understands his gentle nature. Broly responded to Cheelai in a way he's never done before, so of course, netizens were quick to piece together a theory about the pair shacking up.

However, it seems most Dragon Ball Super fans are decidedly against this theory despite its quick rise. Cheelai does seem to be holding a simple bag in the high-resolution images of the promo. It has a tie at the top and everything, after all. There's always a very small chance a kid could be hiding inside, but most fans are inclined to believe Cheelai has stashed food in the sack. So for now, it seems the former soldier can enjoy a childfree life.

Well then

I'm more convinced that the reason they went with this animation style was due to the 'rona

That, and CGI is legitimately awesome.

Like, I actually like CGI shows and want to see how far they take it here.
1pzyjd.jpg

Well you're happy about the CGI and I'm happy about Gohan being a focal point so maybe we could do the fusion dance and watch the movie that way? 😅

Oh wait I just realised Trunks' hair is blue now. I know the young adult version from the future timeline had blue hair (and it was originally blue in the manga), but they retained the purple hair for the kid version during Super. Weird.

Yeah blue hair Trunks kinda bothered me in Super. I'm soooo used to the lavender that blue looks strange on him to me.

I'm glad there's at least consistency between Bulma and Trunks' hair color now. They're supposed to be the same. I prefer purple for both though but what can you do.

As a massive Gotenks fan, I really hope we'll see a successful fusion in the movie.

It's all but confirmed we'll see Fat Gotenks thanks to some images that are going around, so I assume Goten and Trunks will take part in battle at some point in the movie.

Considering how harshly criticised DBS (the series) was for its animation from week to week, with very tight deadlines etc... CGI makes a ton of sense moving forward, where Broly level handdrawn animation isn't really workable unless you're waiting years between projects. I think its an indication that there is a series coming and it will be CGI using the same assets etc... and they will use it to make more DB more often.

I usually hate CG shows, but...if they did re-use the assets from the movie and made a show that looked visually on par with the CG in the movie then I think I'd be on board.

I’ve only barely started it, but hasn’t most of the Dragon Ball Super team been working on Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai? The early episodes at least have awesome 2D animation, so I hope this movie is just a one off for CG. When they try to make CG look/behave like an anime, it doesn’t usually go well…I’m really not expecting a Broly spectacular here.

Really?

Everyone I know hates it.

Like, really hates it.
I haven't read it but what I've seen of it/heard from youtubers was generally positive apart from the release schedule, because theyre not big chapters and some of the cliffhangers don't pay off in a way that is equal to the amount of time waiting for the reveal. But if it was released closer together or binged, its apparently very good

It's Dragon Ball so it's bound to have some Dragon Ball Bullshit, like power-ups for the sake of power-ups but when hasn't DB(Z/S) worked that way?. I feel that in general people expect way too much from a series that's never really been particularly the epitome of great writing and paneling.
Okay I gotta stop you right there because Toriyama's paneling skills are second to none. There is a reason he inspired a whole generation of manga artists.

I'd struggle to think of any other shonen author in the last 30 or so years whose fights practically leap off the page like his.

Yeah I agree! And I think Dragon Ball Super does exactly that, it's more the off-pages that people criticise when the manga isn't about those.

When the 'haters' make comparisons they take the ones you post right now as they remember those as being awesome and compare them to the 'worst' DBS panels, but there isn't a difference between the bad Dragon Ball panels and the bad Dragon Ball Super panels.

Tbh:

Dragon Ball Super is NO different (well, kinda) from Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball before it.

I mean, I never got the impression that I was ever watching a Shakespeare play because it never was; this isn't exactly "high art".

Oh, true that, but I think that's just the YouTube community (think: how the Star Wars YouTube fanbase is different from the one on active social media).

But eh, like I said, never read it.
