News Soul Hackers 2 announced, coming to PS4/5, XSX/S, XBO and Steam this August

I guess that financials report that listed Soul Hackers as a series apart from SMT foreshadowed this

I played the first one last year, it was good I suppose. It suffered heavily from simply not having the kind of combat and progression system you had in other SMT games. The combat was super easy, the whole Magnetite management aspect was easily broken. A lot of the dungeons had tons of empty space. However I think the game is still worthwhile and has its fans because it has a lot of qualities that games of its time had. To sum it up, I think the areas had a good sense of purpose. Not only the dungeons had these gimmicks to make them memorable, but in general the game just had this kind of good pacing that the classics of the time had. Basically in that game, on top of the city you have this virtual world that you can explore and right from the start you can visit various facilities. Some of them may end up being involved in the main quest. It gave me Paper Mario vibes surprisingly enough, you know how the game kind of gives you partially access to an area that ends up being fully accessible in the next chapter. I know this is kind of vague and specific at the same time but I think this feeling is what made the game stand out from others in its genre. It’s nice when a game doesn’t follow too much pre-established tropes and structure from its genre, that way it build an identity and you play through it without exactly knowing what to expect. Way too many games nowadays feel too similar to each other when they either follow genre conventions too closely or add “QoL” to the point that it trivializes entire aspects of the game

Now the first one has Devil Summoner in its name because it’s a direct sequel to that game and it heavily references its characters. This one is simply called Soul Hackers 2 and it seems like it’s just a modern spin of this whole concept of having a cyberpunk setting and an in-game virtual world to explore. I guess I won’t ever know what’s the deal with the Kuzunoha if they don’t port/remake those games in the future

Won’t even comment further on the platform choice, it’s pretty known that Atlus doesn’t make the best business decisions

I honestly can't wait for Steam Deck, can't trust Japanese third party companies. So baffled.

How in blazes is this game not on Switch ffs?

They mentioned the Phantom society a lot in the announcement. So there will clearly be connections.

Switch version mostly likely to come later, Atlus avoiding announcing it now for the double dip sales. This is becoming an ugly trend these days: Alan Wake, Prince of Persia, Life is Strange games...

day 1 sales >>> potential double dipers.

This looks great! I've never played the first game, but this isn't how I remembered it looking.

I'm also shocked at no Switch version, but then I remembered this is Atlus.

I like the colorful aesthetic they're going for since it gives me TMS vibes, but no Switch release means this is a pass for me; fortunately this is releasing at the end of August so I'm not too disappointed since Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be on the horizon.

Strange lack of Switch version aside, I'm not really into these Shirow Miwa character designs. Generally I like his art but this is really not what I personally thought a sequel to Soul Hackers of all things should look like.

Hopefully the story is at least a good one.

If I had to guess it's one of those faux AAA strategies where you make your game look higher profile by skipping the switch. I bet you can already find people out there arguing this game couldn't run on switch.

If it works it works and if it doesn't you can always pull a Demon Slayer and port the game shortly afterwards.

No Switch and it's on Xbox? Interesting choices. Atlus gonna Atlus I suppose.

If mainline SMT focuses on the combat, and Persona has the heavier plot and dating sim elements along with the psychological aspect, then what's the niche of this one?

What about Steam Deck, if you are in a supported country?
Preordered one actually. I'm hopeful about it but doesn't look like portable enough to carry everywhere.

Obviously they are unable to bring it to Switch day one, porting might have taken more than they hoped for. They won't ignore potential double dip money despite that.

This isn't Soul Hackers 2... This is actually Tokyo Mirage Sessions 2 lol.

Even the running/attacking animations look like they've been cribbed directly from TMS! Meanwhile, the game barely even resembles the original Soul Hackers at all.

That's fine by me, I like TMS; so I will very much appreciate a sequel :D

It's being made by the two directors from TMS, so yeah.

Disappointed but not surprised it’s not on the Switch. Fully expect the eventual Etrian Odyssey to be on every platform except the Switch at this point.

Game looks fine but also looks absolutely nothing like the original Soul Hackers which is a shame because the atmosphere of that game was great.

Platform selection makes sense if they are focusing on the west though. I guess Switch is way too weak to run this.

Maybe a port for Switch 2 in 2026?

It's clearly not a high end game, it's not even using UE4 like SMTV did.

People thought this might be a switch exclusive at first, this is clearly a case of Atlus saying "not Switch" in 2018, and by the time that was a mistake it was too late to pivot. I wouldn't be surprised if a Switch port is already being planned/developed but won't get announced until after the worldwide release. Announcing a Switch port before launch would utterly tank launch sales especially in Japan.

Oh i think the sales will manage that even without a Switch announcement for a later release!

Yep this is mostly likely the case here. Announcing a Switch version that would come later would cannibalize the sales. A lot of publishers are doing this. Alan Wake Switch hasn't been announced but we know that it exists.

Probably ESRB will oust the Switch version soon.

Square Enix.
You think so? Personally speaking, I find S-E to be a lot less exhausting, but that might simply be due to me not caring too much about most of their portfolio anymore these days. Asano still delivers some good stuff, but everything else is pretty bleh to me. Makes it pretty easy to shrug their stupidity off, I guess.

That's an understatement. I can't deal with this company anymore. Once Steam Deck arrives (After Q2, who knows when I will get it lol), I won't have to worry about 3rd party on Switch.
Worrying/dealing with 3rd party and Nintendo is slowly getting to a point for me where I'm willing to just go down the "Switch for Nintendo stuff [+ Indies] + PC/PS for everything else [i.e. JP third party games]"-route. I'm simply too tired of dynamics/parts of this industry to keep hoping for things to change. Can't be bothered anymore, haha. Especially on the Japanese side, where it feels like companies make some of the weirdest decisions. Too bad I don't really care about much from the western side of things nowadays. Well, not like support there would be that much better, but y'know, at least it often makes more sense from my point of view on what is getting ported and what isn't and such.

No Switch is so weird. Anyway, sorry but that artstyle is disgusting and the game looks nothing like soul hackers on 3ds (gameplay wise or art style) and that sucks. I don't care much for jrpgs but I would've been so down to play some cool ass old school fist person dungeon crawler again. I kinda wonder if this game is even made by Atlus.

Yeah, the TMS FE team is doing it. Which makes the no switch version even more ridiculous. Good luck in japan atlua, you really need it.

I'm not really feeling it. It doesn't have the same atmospheric tones that the original had. The logo feels too clean. And dropping the 'Devil Summoner' from the title also annoys me.

Also: Atlus platform choices barely ever make sense. No Switch? Maybe for Dane...IDK

That's the thing, I only care about Japan side in terms of 3rd party games and despite the OVERWHELMING success and dominance in Japan, lol nope no Switch. Why? No reason.

I'm honestly exhausted. I just want my Jrpgs in handheld but apparently that's too much to ask for.

They dropped Devil Summoner because nowadays the 'Devil Summoner' brand is already taken up by the Raidou games. It would be conufsing as hell to have both branches under the same brand. So they now have Soul Hacker as brand for the classic Devil Summoner games, and Devil Summoner as brand for the Raidou games.

Also the atmosphere makes sense. A 90s game had 90s cyberpunk aestethics, a 20s cyberpunk game has 20s cyberpunk aesthethics.

Persona: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoners: Soul Hackers 2: Definitive Edition

You know that, if there was a PS handheld around these days, this would be on there 100%. ;P
try to change my mind!

(Seriously though, I could see that scenario, haha)
I won't change your mind because I 100% agree. If a PS handheld exists, you will see these companies RUSHING to support it.

Hot take: They likely had a Vita version too but were told to scrap it to make it not look so obvious!

(This hot take might or might not include sarcasm)

When was the last time we saw a Raidou game?

And I'm not saying it doesn't make sense as far as the atmosphere, I just wished they would've kept the 90's tone of it, that's all.

Hope everyone who is looking forward to is enjoys it though.

Oh that's SUPER interesting. I'm largely familiar with the groups anime works, but not much of their game stuff. Still, we're in for a treat.

Curious if it's the entire group contributing to the soundtrack or just select members. Just lists MONACA so I assume the former, but I guess we'll see.

EDIT: Having checked the way they're listed, could just be select team members looking at other credited works.

Yeah it definitely look like that game. Btw weren't that team the one behind the devil survivors games? I heard alot of people say that and I loved those games (I like strategy/tactic games) but tsm looks pretty different from I've seen while there's like a Digimon game or 2 with exactly the same art style as the devil survivors games. Any info about that?

I know it’s weird Soul Hackers 2 is skipping Switch but I feel like Switch has gotten solid support in terms of indie/AA JRPGs.

Digimon Cyber Sleuth and the Devil Survivor games have the same character designer I believe.

As for Soul Hackers 2 it seems to me that it’s positioned more as a “TMS without actually using the TMS brand” more than an actual sequel to Soul Hackers.
