This might be the biggest surprise of the Direct for me! I was just listening to the OST yesterday too! Going to love playing through this.
The confusion from now on about which Megalovania people are talking about is going to be great.

They're both great

I'm glad the awful episodic release idea a Square employee mentioned years ago got seemingly rejected
i totally forgot about this one lol

Bit too rich for my blood, hopefully the rearranged soundtrack will be available separately.
it will. none of ost included in ce is exclusive there, at least from what i remembered for all team asano's release

Genuinely cannot believe this is getting remade and coming west. It is one of my favorite games ever and I'm so so so fucking excited for more people to be able to play it. Feels like a fever dream.

With S-E looking at its back catalogue, especially seemingly long-lost SNES games, you do have to wonder what's on the horizon... Rudra's Treasure? Bahamut Lagoon? Treasure Hunter G?

HD-2D has been the best new thing in gaming for an old ass person like me this generation. Octopath, Dragon Quest and now this absolute Gem…

I think Bahamut Lagoon will happen if they're going all-in on TRPGs again. Rudra will be a pain in the rear to localize but Kawazu is throwing his clout around so I could see that. THG is a wild card because that was a Sting project, but it share some similarities with LAL so maybe?

But I don't want them to stop there. There's stuff on Wonderswan I'd love to see updated, most of which were Kawazu projects. And all the wacky stuff they did in the PS1/PS2 era like the DreamFactory games (Tobal/Bouncer/Ergheiz), Bushido Blade, Racing Lagoon, etc.

The ultimate irony is that the Switch is turning out to be one hell of a PS1 backwards compatibility box.

never even heard of this before today but the whole previously japan only thing kinda intrigues me

Having never heard of this game before the direct I'm actually quite excited for it. Seems really cool.

There's a lot of neat stuff that was left in Japan back in the day due to audience considerations and the length of time to produce a localization causing a number of late generation stuff completely missing the West because the PS1 was on the market and Nintendo + 3rd parties didn't want to invest more into the SNES. Many of these received fan translations decades ago but it's great to see them reaching audiences that don't necessarily pay attention to that corner of the Internet.

As a retro enthusiast, one of the best things this generation I think is seeing companies like Nintendo and Square starting to seriously dig around their archives and bring things out of the vaults for re-releases using Unity wrappers or rebuilding them from the ground up. I'm not entirely sure if this is why but I imagine a combination of younger talent (that grew up on these games) at these companies starting to come into power and the older developers sharing nostalgia for some of these projects is what's causing a sudden push to reissue them.

After the trademarks, I was just expecting a simple remaster, but to get a full-fledged HD-2D remake?! I am both surprised and hyped.

Well, at least they dumped the association to some of the artists originally associated with this game. That's an immediate 100% improvement in my desire to play this.

I’ve always wanted to try out this cult classic, I remember planning to dig for the fan translation but never got around to it. The HD 2D looks great.

I need this. Looks like it’ll be €50 in Europe.

Can you elaborate further? I'm interested to know more about this.
One of Live A Live's concepts was each main character for each scenario would be visually designed by a manga artist that was signed to Shogakukan at the time. While some of them are great (like Gosho Aoyama of Detective Conan fame) and some are questionable/meh, one of them was Yoshinori Kobayashi (who did the character design for Pogo in the prehistoric scenario). A year after his involvement with the original game, he went down in history as possibly the most controversial manga artist in Japan's history for his most famous work acting as historical revisionism that favourably propagandizes the Japanese actions during the Pacific War (including, but not limited to, the Nanking Massacre, "comfort women", etc) LONG after anyone could claim it was anything close to a good idea to do so. He's the Japanese equivalent of a neo-Nazi, basically.

So, most likely to distance themselves from him and his work as much as they possibly can (and because getting the others all back to do new artwork would likely be pretty tricky anyways), none of the game's original artwork is in use anywhere in this release and has all been redone by the same artist working on the Asano games. It was a smart decision overall.

I know when I saw the game's name, I had a minor sphincter clench until I saw the whole trailer and relaxed.

What I'm totally floored with this LiveALive release is how much it pushes the 2D-HD style to its absolute limit by blending art styles representing several eras together. The only era I have a hold up is the far future one where background elements seem more pixelated/"lo-fi" than average. All other eras just straight up look phenomenal.

Considering that there is some push from the people behind it, maybe Terranigma can get a 2DHD remake

Now that Front Mission lives again what I really want (really really want) is the Ogre Battle series to make its return.
Apparently Final Fantasy Tactics remake is 100% coming, so thats a terrific one to look forward to as well.
O and Vagrant Story in some fashion would be rad.

edit:
O yea and the Quintet Trilogy, can't forget that; Even if it just came to the Online Service, that'd be sweet

Mic drop. Like, this is an amazing thing to happen and quite honestly, I want this more than I want Triangle Strategy.
I kind of felt bad for Triangle Strategy. Its looking quite brilliant, and its original, but dang its thunder was absolutely stolen for me when Front Mission, Live A Live HD-2D, Chrono Cross all drop in succession like bam-bam-bam
I was just a bit Wow'd out by the time the Triangle Strategy segment came up :p

Yeah, don't get me started on the Enix side!!

I'm also hoping we do see Soul Blazer, Illusion of Time/Gaia, and Terranigma at some point. The way things are going, it's looking more positive than ever before. I do love how Forever has been able to convince S-E to hand over FM1 and FM2... someone needs to interview the team and ask what other S-E classics it would love to resurrect!

I think some remakes like this can happen at square only if someone there is pushing for it to happen. My bet is Tokita, the original director made this happen. Like he made FF4 3d happen on DS (also with team asano). He was also director on ff4 sfc.
That is why we never saw some remakes for FF5 and 6. Nobody at square from the original teams was avaible/interested so it never happened. And that is why there are more care put into saga remasters than FF ones : Kawazu is pushing for it while FF ones are on auto pilot.
I won't hold my breath for other remakes in the same style honestly because I highly doubt there is a driving force for them to happen.

Well, you could argue that Team Asano made games much in the vein of FF V. Four Heroes of Light and Bravely heavily borrow from FF V (and also III), so remaking the original likely never crossed anyone's mind.

Biggest surprise of the Direct so far. I'm definitely curious, as I've never played Live a Live but know it by reputation.

Wow, I had no idea about any of that. Definitely a smart decision and the new box art looks great.

I really think NSO is the perfect dumping ground for a lot of the stuff S-E doesn't have plans to remaster or do basic Unity ports of. I think it's the only path forward for getting Evermore and FF Mystic Quest back into circulation at this point.

This looked really cool. Usually get bored in the future of Chrono trigger but here I can go there first.

Very cool! I remember wondering if there was a connection when I was going through my iTunes library and noticed both games have a similar final boss track name.
What's more, I read that Shimomura did the soundtrack on this game (the original release that is). The queen herself! The more I learn about this game, the more I'm hyped!

Yea, Tokita still loves this game. One of the characters made a cameo appearance in Final Fantasy Dimensions 2 I believe. There was an anniversary livestream at the end of 2020 with some of the members of the LAL team and they said they would look into doing a re-release, so this is the fruits of that labor I think.

Also, Tokita had better roll onto Hanjuku Hero next. I know there was a new one or a remake of the SNES one for mobile phones while Tokita was focused on mobile. It'd be great to see that series get a revival especially with Square-Enix's newfound remembrance that strategy/tactics RPGs exist and can sell.

It's one of her better OSTs even! She also contributed tracks to Front Mission which is also getting remade :)

Not sure if it's on other services, but the OST is purchasable on iTunes (but not streamable through Apple Music):

Wait wait wait, Tokita the man behind FFIV and Chrono Trigger directed this??? It gets even better.

Oh man, I was already sold on Front Mission, this is great. Hope she's back to do the soundtrack on both of them again.

This Direct has been too good.
