Xbox Microsoft Xbox Discussion |ST|

I'm kind of all over the place, tbh. I'm not a huge FPS guy and I generally don't like games that are too easy or unfairly difficult, but still a bit of a challenge or at least offset their difficulty somehow. I lean more towards more chill games and good vibes, but always up for a good dark game/fantasy if it's well written without being pretentious or taking itself too seriously.

IMO, there's no better chill fantasy game than The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. There's a metric crapton of lore, but it never gets too heavy. There are some mildly humourous bits scattered throughout. Some people don't like the combat scaling (the enemies always match your level), but I don't mind it at all. There's also a difficulty slider you can change at any time (Skyrim also has this). The Shivering Isles expansion is also excellent, with weirder vibes than the main game.

I did play Oblivion on PC way back when. Never tried Skyrim though and it did catch my eye on Game Pass yesterday (and of course has gotten glowing reception throughout its life cycle), so I might check that out. Do you know how Elder Scrolls Online is in comparison?

Skyrim is also very good, though the gameplay isn't quite as deep as Oblivion's. The dragon battles are great initially, but eventually become repetitive. I do like the weapon/armour forging system, though. Note that the version of Skyrim on current gen consoles is the Special Edition, which has brighter, revamped lighting.

I don't know much about TES Online, except that the vibes of it don't speak to me personally. I see at as the "fast food" version of TES.

Oblivion is kinda hard to go back to on console these days, IMO. Even when it's 4K. I loaded it up last year.
PC is the way to go, since you can mod the dreadful leveling and scaling issues away, as well as try and fix the faces some.

Skyrim may be downgraded (or just simplified) in several ways when compared to Oblivion and Morrowind, but it's so so much easier to jump in and play. You can even mod it on console.

All I want is AoE4 getting a Series port and I will buy an S faster than you can say "Wololo!"

I am already considering getting one within the next year or so as is. Especially if Starfield turns out to be great.

I could’ve sworn Jez said multiple times in the Xbox Two Podcast that it was getting a port.

Oh, nice! I'm not really following Xbox stuff too closely and have not heard of any official announcement yet, but that seems promising.

Annnnd here comes the shovelware! Lol, with the ridiculous amount of quality content I'm not worried, but it bothers me in some small way that some of my sub supports Race with Ryan.

Excited for The Gunk!

Adding Ben 10 and Paw Patrol around this time of year is a bit of a gift for parents who want to have a bit of respite from kids over Christmas, and then they can punish them with Race with Ryan when they've been bad. Smart move for the service in general really as Microsoft try to build up their content for the younger market.

Anyway, looking forward to playing Lake and might give Broken Age another go, don't remember playing part 2 so will be interesting to see how that ended.

Power On was a great watch.

Really liked that they didn't shy away from talking about how rough things were a lot of the time, even with the break out successes of Halo, Live, 360 and Kinect. I think even people with little to no Xbox familiarity would appreciate it too, it's just very well done and you also get some insight into what the industry was like years ago with Sony, Nintendo, and other publishers at time depending on the given topic.

It's nice to see the plethora of faces who are actually behind this stuff, and be reminded of the hell they often go through to make the stuff we obsess about.

Does anyone have any recommendations for extra storage for the Series S?
Check any external hard drive which you could use for PS4/Xbox One. In my case I bought the STEA4000400 from Seagate, I think it's cheap enough and reliable, and I use mostly for non-Series games.

I've had the Power On documentary series about Xbox in the background today while I've been working.

It's honestly one of the most candid and open documentaries I think I've ever seen about a console. They go from the Windows CE vs Direct X battles of the original Xbox, to the fact that the original prototypes were basically ducktaped together and running from a stolen version of Windows, to the complete mess that was the RROD, to completely owning up to how bad the Xbox One reveal and launch were.

They even introduce Don Mattrick in Episode 5 with depressing funeral music playing in the background.

Anyone who hasn't watched it yet, definitely well worth watching:

That's a great series and it's shockingly candid. It really gets across how hard it was, and how much of a gamble the whole thing was.

No spoilers, but Halo needed to cut one of the middle back half missions. Too many missions to go down the big structure and then finally make it back to the surface. Just took too long.

Also on the Elder Scrolls topic Skyrim recently got a next gen patch too so that might be more enticing for those with a Series X or S.

Didn't play a lot this weekend but got some time on my new Xbox in. I'm really enjoying playing a proper FIFA, ngl. But what I've tried on Game Pass so far over the last week:
  • Myst: Seems a bit obtuse so I decided after an hour or so that I wouldn't spend time on it. Of course it's basically a game since the early '90s that I never played so I'm not overly surprised but there are just so many good games on there that I'd rather spend time on.
  • Before We Leave: I tried this out for a bit and, while I like the concept, I think there are better games in the genre out there. It doesn't really offer anything special imho.
  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice: I finished the Surtr boss fight and I like this game. Will definitely play it over the holidays. Looks beautiful and am already invested in the story. I relate to many parts of it a lot, without wanting to delve into medical history or local folklore here.
  • Halo Infinite: I'm not a huge FPS guy but it's getting a good rep so I decided to try it out. I think I did the first two or three missions? Anyway, it's decent enough! Will admit that it feels a bit monotonous so far, though, but I'll pick it up again and see if that changes.
  • Phoenix Point: I really needed that XCOM itch scratched and PP does a relatively good job there. I've finished three missions and am definitely going to continue with this one. I played XCOM 2 on Switch and I don't know if I think it plays better mechanically or if I'm just getting used to playin such a similar game with a different control scheme. Will make my mind up later.
A strange thing happened, I've only bought FIFA 22 but Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games suddenly turned up as owned games in my library on the app this morning. I don't care for Sega's Olympic games but I won't say no to trying out Odyssey. But I'm confused why they turned up at all, lmao. Is there some event/promotion happening or am I just getting lucky with a glitch in the system?

I think AC Odyssey had a free weekend, perhaps Tokyo 2020 also had one?

Glad you're enjoying Hellblade, really good overall.

Played through The Forgotten City on Gamepass over the weekend and it's another brilliant timeloop game. Not quite Outer Wilds level but I loved how they explored classical cultures and mythology and while the character models aren't anything special, the world is great to explore and it's written really well with some great voice work. Would highly recommend it.

Fuck this Xbox sale of the week let me complete my Splinter Cell collection (still not sure if I should get Conviction or not), but I was expecting Yakuza 1 and 2 to finally complete the collection. Oh well.

I bought many MS stuff recently (Halo MCC, Rare Replay, Dishonored and Prey games), but honestly I don't want to stay always subbed to Game Pass, only when I want try new games.

I really love my time when I play the Halo Infinite campaign but after I stop and think about it I always feel like there's something missing. It's too predictable perhaps. The flow of overworld same looking environment to inner missions with same environments. I.. I just don't know.

I'm ready to see them actually fulfill the potential that's already here. It's a really great game, but clearly falls short of what their vision for it was.

Just finished the Halo Infinite. Ok the last bit of the game was pretty intense and lots of fun! Loved it. The game overall was nice but it really needed just a bit of variety and more set pieces. Halo 3 had some amazing and epic set pieces. I think I would have been satisfied with a mission on the overworld that had some variety to it. Even if it were closed off within the open world. But it seems they are still adding to the game with expansions so I am looking forward to what they're gonna do with that.

I received my Series S today, I'm not really a Resolution guy I just want to play games at 60fps so I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase ! I played Halo Infinite and it looks PRETTY GOOD.
i'm curious about the future when Xbox developers will develop only for the Series X/S, the optimization will be even better than what they already did when developing for 4(!) systems at once.

Forgot we had an Xbox thread.

My Xbox Series S will be here in 2 days. I hardly touched my Xbox One OG. I actually plan to get Gamepass Ultimate. At first they were sold out of both XS, but then nabbed an S as I seen it in stock.

I love GameStop for offering the various payment plans! I honestly have decided to use GameStop again due to the "buy now, pay later" option.

Welcome to the cult family!
XSS for days baby.

Speaking of which, I think I am really close to finishing Halo, among other games which I expect to have an LttP on. I think I have quite.... Interesting thoughts on a lot of these games.

I honestly missed out on the OG Xbox craze, but was able to get my mom and dad to put a 360 on layaway at Walmart. My mom worked there, and was not expecting my parents to get me one.

Giving it a bump since I got the Series S today and all hooked up. I so far played MLB The Show for a little bit, GreedFall, and gonna play UFC 4 soon. I played them on the cloud, and it was great. I think for some games playing on the cloud maybe my way to go. Also my Series S does not have the usual 512GB, but like 300GB or so. It was a pre-owned console and had to go thru set up etc. Hm, weird...

Edit: Nevermind. It's supposed to be that amount of GB.

My Gamertag is RikaxNipah on Xbox. It's so far been an amazing experience, and Gamepass is loaded with different games I enjoyed on the 360.

So friends, I certainly don't need to buy Mass Effect Legendary Edition for my Series S right at this minute because I have a stack of other things to get through. However, I came across this website with a very tempting low price and so I have questions:

1) Has anybody used Enjify before? Is it reliable?*

2) This might be silly but: will a 'worldwide' code be redeemable on my UK Series S? I'm not sure why there's the region distinction, because I can find UK and EU specific codes, too.

*I'm Googling this and hoo boy, this does not seem to be a reliable website.

So friends, as an update to this after doing some research - stay away from Enjify. I didn't buy from them, but they have a very poor reputation. CDKeys' price of £27 is still decent though...

I'm close to finish Dead Space (chapter 9) and I wonder how the remake will turn out, specially when EA devs say is going to be inspired in Resident Evil 2. Dead Space level design is mostly fantastic, but it's very linear and each level is separated through chapters, while RE2!R is kinda open-ish. If anything, I feel Dead Space will have a level design closer to RE3!R, imho, which it wouldn't bad but is a bit different than the better RE remake.

I'm glad to play the game for first time this year.

With all the buzz around Infinite I should probably give Halo another go (admittedly, I've only played a tiny bit of Halo 3 on 360 and the first game through the MCC), but it really doesn't seem to click for me for some reason. Maybe it's one of those things I just need to give more of a chance to, but maybe it's just not for me.

100% press into it!

I know I have nostalgia glasses on for the entire series up to this point, but the first game still holds up very well, especially the story.

Same here. I never played Halo whatsoever on the original Xbox or or the 360. I don't have nostalgia goggles for the games, but do wish to try and play it.

Lmao I still lurk on Era from time to time for other platform info and just accidentally posted this there 🤦‍♂️

Anyhow

I'm still loving Infinite, but as I get further into the campaign and tired of the Multiplayer content / frustrated by server issues, I can't help but feel reviews were a bit over-inflated based on the premise of it nailing the feel and core gameplay loop so solidly. It makes a great first impression and is a wonderful base to build on, but it's definitely not botw-level in regards to being something that will live on for years beyond it's launch without significant support.

Woah, I just got my first ever wait time to play a game on X Cloud while launching Infinite

"Lots of people are playing! Wait time is about 2 minutes"

I downloaded a heap of game pass recommendations from various forums but of the lot, I haven’t been able to pull myself away from TheHunter: Call of the Wild.

As someone who loves good looking, open world walking sims, this game does so much right. Just bought all the DLC and can’t wait to dig into all the maps (and actually try out the hunting).

Played Lake on Game Pass, and while it was a little janky, it was super charming. Some of the characters have stuck with me, and I'm sad there aren't more days to just play and interact with these folks. Cozy game, definitely worth a play.

I have (mostly) the same feelings.

I was way, way into the campaign for the first three hours. Then I noticed how I was just cycling through the same content (walk/drive/grapple hook to F.O.B., kill a couple of Elites/Grunts, free marines, rinse and repeat) and uninstalled the campaign.

I really like the multiplayer, though. I even (shamefully) bought the Battle Pass.

Played a variety of games like Dragon Age Origins, UFC 4, Fuzion Frenzy, Fight Night Champions, Werewolf The Apocalypse, and so many more. So far Gamepass is a great option, and even bought a few or so games on the sale(s) too. Got most of Yakuza on Xbox besides 6 and Like a Dragon.

I've been recently thinking a lot about Microsoft's comments about an Xbox app being developed for smart TVs that can stream game pass games directly to your TV, so all you need is a controller.

Granted, Spencer mentioned "within 12 months" when he first brought it up in November 2020, and the only other time it was mentioned since was briefly before E3 in June 2021 how they're working with different partners.

At CES 2022, Samsung announces their TVs will work with game streaming platforms Stadia, GeForce Now and Utomik, but no mention of Xbox. While it still seems reasonable to expect it to be released sometime this year, if there's no mention of it now when would you expect such an announcement to happen (especially if E3 isn't even in the cards)?

A small example of how this game just pales in comparison to Botw, reminding me why Botw was open world magic in a world where I was tired of the modern open world

I just climbed on top of an exploded structure that was on fire (as a part of the story) to see if it had any easter eggs or skulls. Unfortunately, the fire on this structure was just visual. It caused no damage to me, I could stand right in it, and it didn't properly scale / load in to adjust for me being close to it.

Mass Effect and Outer Wilds dropped on Game Pass the other day. I’ve played neither but might give them a spin now. Want to finish AC:Valhalla though and Legends: Arceus is less than 3 weeks out. Choices, choices..

Follow-up post: How much of a must-play is Mass Effect? I feel like it's one of those games everyone should have played just because of its rep but I'm strapped for time. Do I try and squeeze it into my schedule?

Play Outer Wilds first. Honestly it's one of the best games ever made. The controls take a bit (30 min) to get used to but that's purposely done.
