Might as well get this in early! This thread is where you can track the games you've beaten/completed in 2022, and maybe provide some thoughts on the game if you're so inclined. I already beat my first game, as I just missed out on beating it by a few minutes =D

1. F.E.A.R.
This game was pretty interesting, though it took a few hours until I finally got the hang of it, especially once I figured out that using slowmo and a shotgun would pretty much work against almost every enemy in the game. I thought there'd be some huge firefight at the end but the end was actually pretty easy, more scenic/atmospheric than anything.

Updated list:
  1. F.E.A.R.
  2. Manhunt
  3. Resident Evil: Code Veronica
  4. We Know The Devil
  5. Manhunt 2
  6. Halo 4
  7. Grand Theft Auto III
  8. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  9. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  10. The Pro Wrestling
  11. The Pro Wrestling 2
  12. Gunvalkyrie
  13. Thief II: The Metal Age
  14. Black Mesa
  15. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  16. NHL 22
  17. NBA Jam (Sega Genesis)
  18. Evil Dead: The Game

Well that was quick

2. Manhunt
I really like the snuff film/dark mood of the game, though since I played the PS2 original and not the PC port, the later levels with the guns got pretty hard as a lot of times you have to be right up to an enemy to shoot them in the head for the instant kill but they can also do a ton of damage to you too. It was pretty fun overall though.

(1) Beat Cthulhu Saves Christmas earlier (02/01/22). I started it on Christmas Eve given its theme. It took a while to grow on me as I didn't quite understand the battle system until later on in the game--but in the end, it was fun, only cost me a couple of pounds on sale, and I'll be looking out for more games from the same developer. 4/5 with an additional point awarded for value. Main criticism is that the dungeons are boring and linear and are just sparse spots to grind. Great characters and an awesome soundtrack.

Attack on Titan 2. Finished Bayo 1 late December butt that technically doesn't count.

Should be able to finish Bayo 2 this month and hopefully another RPG. Then hopefully Pokemon in February(gonna spread out playtime for that one)

1.) Cruis’n Blast (defining completion as getting gold on all courses): Really fun blast from the past. I appreciate that this game knows what it is; it can’t look as good as Forza, or play as well as…uhh…Forza Horizon, but boy can it ever succeed at being a mindless tribute to the arcades of yore. The plethora of weird unlocks is a treat. When I used the Chopper and realized it was literally just a reskinned car I laughed out loud.

I will be really curious to see how online multiplayer shakes out. It feels like every race in local multiplayer is a photo finish, so it will be interesting to see what legs, if any, the game has competitively.

Three out of four stars from me. Look forward to returning to this with company!

Just finished the Switch port of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. I had already played through it on the Vita so there weren’t many surprises to be had.

On to Goodbye Despair, which I started on Vita but never finished.

This is technically a cheat, but I "finished" Cruis'n Blast late New Year's Eve. I unlocked the final vehicle and decided to put it away for a while until the DLC is released.

Overall I enjoyed the game, but a few things hold it back from being a complete recommendation. $40 is pretty steep. I got it for $20, which was worth it. I really didn't like how often stages were re-used with different overlays, some of which were annoying (I really disliked the cop cars crashing into me constantly!). Also, the AI was kinda annoying (crashed cars respawning immediately) and it felt like saving boosts for the final stretch was the only way to win.

All issues aside, I had a great time and it came at a perfect time for me to dig in and enjoy a dumb, mindless but fun arcade racer.

Finished Death's Door just now, really loved it for the most part. I would have liked a map, but I understand why one wasn't given. I ended up 100%ing it and I'm glad I did. It was a nice top down Zeldaish game as I been craving one for a good bit now.

Finished that a couple days ago as well, really liked it. I do however wish that the end-game content was a bit more... difficult?

Felt more like tedious quests rather than something truly interesting. Had a few more seeds to plant, carrying that damn cephalopod without the map was very hard lol, stuff like that. I would have at least liked remixes of each boss fight that were much more difficult. Gravedigger being the only combat section of it and him being strangely easy was a disappointment.

Overall really liked the game.

Yeah, I was expecting another boss
I guess they wanted to add that stuff in the main game, but felt it might be too bloated so made it optional.

5. Kirby's Dream Land 2 (Game Boy) [8/10]
6. Final Fight: "Streetwise" (PS2) [8.5/10]
7. Excitebike (NES) [9/10]

#1. Valiant Hearts: The Great War

I bought this game on a sale years ago but for some reason I kept on pushing it back and not starting it. I'm glad I finally did however. The game takes place in World War I and focuses on how raw and brutal the war was. Narrative is definitely the game's highlight, showing the war in an interesting way and with a touching story (even if a bit emotionally manipulative at times).

Oh forgot to note I also completed F.I.S.T - Forged In Shadow Tech (PC, Epic Games Store). This was a really solid metroidvania with fun combat system. Story is whatever, don't expect much just go in for fun. Some jank but overall solid 8/10

1. Mortal Kombat 11 story mode(Switch).
10/10 because I'm a fanboy. Well, the story was really awesome, I liked the mess with the timeline and Liu Kang being recognized as the main character again, the game is fucking great, I'm having a really good time with it. I'll probably play the story once again because I did it in only two days lol. Will buy Aftermath whenever I have some money to do so. For those wondering about the Switch port, the biggest take aways are the cinematics of the fight openings and fatalities which really take a huge hit. During gameplay it looks really great, and it's 60FPS.

1. Carto (Sunhead Games / Humble Games) - physical via iam8bit
This game got me good over the weekend, and I blew through it in ~7ish hours. The concept of manipulating the world while also building it is fun, and the writing was generally witty and cute. The artstyle was great and super wholesome. I admit I did look up how to get secret stuff, but it didn't change my experience with the actual game. I did have to get a glimpse at one answer since I was being dumb, but otherwise it was smart and had a decent difficulty curve that kept it from being stale throughout. A very charming game to start the year! B

1. Ace Attorney Trilogy. The first and third games are really good, the second one is good but not on the same level. Occasionally had to use a walkthrough when I couldn't figure out how to progress (and man I hated that Blue Badger puzzle in the last case of the first game). The story is definitely a strong point and I'd cop to a trilogy of games 4-6. Will eventually play Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

3. Resident Evil: Code Veronica
I played the X remaster for 360 via BC. This game was pretty hard at times, but as with every RE game of course I ended up with too many items at the end because I hoarded earlier on. It was pretty fun though but I'd still say of the 4 classic ones I've played so far the OG Resident Evil is my favourite.

First game finished in 2022 is Metroid Dread. This was my introduction to Metroid, and I'm blown away by what an amazing IP this is. I am primed for whatever comes next, but... my thumbs could use some rest.

I highly recommend finding a way to play Zero Mission. Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time, but Zero Mission is a near perfect game and an amazing way to experience the franchise as a relative new-comer.

Beat my first game for the year.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (NS) [Finished January 7th, 2022] - 7.5

Feel a bit mixed on the game overall. I think the areas where Skyward Sword shines really shine, but the game had some incredibly weak moments and worst of all felt very repetitive. My final playtime was about ~15 hours more than your standard Zelda adventure, and I think the worst thing I can say about it is that it didn't feel like the game really encapsulated more ideas, concepts, or enjoyable gameplay segments than an average Zelda title, despite the increased length. A lot of the bosses are incredibly fun though, the soundtrack is great, and the story has its moments. I particularly liked how much the game talked down to Link, almost pointing out how unremarkable of a character he is despite consistently being designated as 'deserving' to be the hero of legend. There was some unexpectedly cool dialogue choices too where you get to make Link into a big ol' dick. Some nice writing in there in general.

  1. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4
Not quite as good as 3 mechanically but still easily the best musou franchise to me. Loads of characters that all have really good movesets, canonically strong characters are satisfyingly overpowered and it's just really good stress relief for a while like most musou games.

I have completed nothing. So far. I'm on Dantooine in Knights of the Old Republic, have Dungeon Encounters to play, and a bunch of options on Xbox Series S.

1. Final Fantasy XIV Online - PC - Stormblood - Finished the Post Stormblood questline, so now I'm fully done with the expansion.

On paper this would be my favorite of the XIV stories so far, Lyse and Hien are great main characters, Zenos while not that interesting, serves well as a main villain, plus Yotsuyu is a really good secondary antagonist, and the supporting cast is all pretty good too. but it has some weird pacing issues, plus some strange omissions entirely story wise, like they were dealing with a lot of plot points and they just forgot to elaborate on some things, otherwise it has the for the most part the best gameplay of XIV so far, and the better climaxes of the game, Doma Castle, the Ala Mhigo Duty, Shinryu, Tsukuyomi, the Ghimlyt Dark, these sequences matches if not surpass the best of XIV, like Praetorium and the Final Steps of Faith. An issue that arises is that dialogue in the post SB quests starts to drag on the exposition, a problem that I'm also feeling on what I have played of Shadowbringers so far, something that I don't remember being an issue at all in either Realm Reborn, Heavensward, or the main Stormblood scenarios, which is a bizarre contrast within the same questline to the Tsukuyomi Trial being the best set piece of storytelling in the game, combining clear and concise exposition with gameplay without interruptions really well, which makes me question why the amount of flashbacks and hammering of points previous to it, when is clearly not needed. Omega is my favorite raid so far, just back to back great bosses, and some very nice character moments, Return to Ivalice is pretty good, tho I prefer the Crystal Tower and Void Ark raids.

1. SMTV; Completed 07/01/2022

Very good game. 75 hours and official looking forward to the next entry.

No idea what to play next. Probably something on Game Pass.

Two for me so far

1. Kingdom Hearts 1.5

Enjoyed the game but it really made me realise how lucky we are as Nintendo fans when it comes to control schemes. Frankly, even with the remastered version of KH, the controls are shockingly bad and I felt like I was battling with the camera for most of the game. When you compare it with its contemporary Nintendo games, it really is apparent how much focus Nintendo has on this kind of thing.

2. Freedom Planet

As a massive Mega Drive Sonic fan it took me a little while to get into this one, but ultimately enjoyed it. I feel like with the Sonic Mania teams input, the upcoming sequel could be something really special

1. January 3rd, 2022 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild randomizer
Amazing, and hilarious. Got Revali's Gale from a korok, and the person who were supposed to give me the Gerudo clothes gave me bokoblin guts, so I couldn't get into the city... 10/10

2. January 6th, 2022 - Nier: Automata, Ending E
Decided to kick off 2022 with a Nier marathon, since Replicant was my GOTY. I sacrificed my save data this time. Game's a masterpiece. 10/10

3. January 8th, 2022 - Nier: Replicant, Ending A
Very impactful and emotional journey, I'm looking forward to getting the other endings later. 8.5/10

Finished up Chicory early this morning. I enjoyed my time with it, but near the end I really gave up on even trying to make the map look artsy. lol I was surprised over how much HD rumble was used, all the different little sound effects for the paint, the splatoon like swimming. The touch screen controls were so good and the colors really popped on my OLED, spilt joycons were nice too due to the HD rumble and pointer. I do wish there were more types of puzzles as I grew tired of painting certain walls a certain way to open up a new path. Still had fun, the story and characters were interesting enough and I did enjoy the few easter eggs I saw throughout the game. Was a nice kick back game to play after Death's Door.

I don't think I've completed any game yet, but I've been playing A Link to the Past for the first time in a few years - and I played that game a lot on the GBA, even if I didn't like it much. I'm playing the "Redux" hack which enables me to change items with L and R button and I'm enjoying more than the last times I've played it, even if I still have some gripes with it (the Dark World is mostly all dungeons once you know what you're doing!). Still a great game, undeniably.

#2. Final Fantasy Adventure (from the Collection of Mana)

First game of the Mana series. Gameplay is like a cross between Final Fantasy and the original Legend of Zelda. It's actually a lot of fun but it's dragged down by hardware limitations that force you to use the menus A LOT and by other classical annoying stuff of old games (cryptic systems, small inventories and such). Game's story and characters are surprisingly good, which was quite nice.

Took me like all day, but went through my first run of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. It can get very chaotic at times, but you have a nice range of items to help , and with the cannon you can go back to a level instead of repeating the whole set again. I tried out some of the different knights and they are pretty fun to mess with for the most part. I'll keep this downloaded for a while so I can play a run or two in between my backlog clearing run.

Finished my first game of the year, Ys IX. I got in on release day and kind fizzled out with playing it during the end of summer. I was near the end so I decided to just finish it today. Took me about 30 hours or so.

2. Ty the Tasmanian Tiger HD (Krome Studios) - physical
I played Ty back 20 years ago and got pretty decently into it. Returning to it, I'm glad to say it still has a good feel to it, and I understood more how some mechanics work. I did not exactly care for the outback level because it was somewhat of a gimmick, and one problem with the game is missing one out of 300 opals. Thankfully that only happened at the end, and I got 96% complete. I wonder if the game was originally rushed out because they kinda throw in one of the talismans as opposed to another hub of levels. Either way, unless new biomes or gimmicks were made, I'm not sure another set of levels would be as good. Ultimately, it was a fun title, and it was nice to get some nostalgia to smooth early 00's collectathons. B+

(2) Syberia [from Syberia 1 & 2 for Switch]
Completed 08/01/21

I really enjoyed this adventure. It's a decent port of a 2002 PC point-and-clicker, with upscaled static backgrounds and character models. It's a game I always assumed I'd played, but I realised straight away I'd confused this with The Longest Journey.

With the exception of one drink-mixing conundrum that relies too heavily on knowledge of music, the puzzles are not ridiculously obtuse and challenged without frustrating. I enjoyed the transformation of Kate through her telephone dialogue with unseen characters back home, the sumptuous artwork, clockpunk aesthetic, and the brooding atmosphere of the sparsely inhabited locales. Voice work is very good, especially for the era.

Biggest gripe is the poor quality of some of the text outside of the dialogue boxes (which often autoscroll too fast; another gripe)--fuzzy textures that can't be zoomed (outside of the Switch OS's built in accessibility feature) make it difficult when playing docked to read some of the literature you find in the game.

It's said the ending is abrupt. I felt fairly satisfied with the ending but I'm biased given this is a double pack of games I paid just £1.49 for and I went in with the knowledge of future games. If I had a time machine and went back to 2002 and bought this at full price... Maybe I'd have felt that.

Right now though I'm ready to continue Kate's adventure east.

5/5

I only played the first one last year yet somehow I still felt so nostalgic while playing through this. Incredible cast, incredible gameplay, incredible music, incredible story, incredible experience overall

Wow, so we've got both Pineapple and Pineapple Pizza posting in here.

I finished:

1) Halo Infinite - I am remarkably surprised at the quality of the campaign. Feels like a genuine return to form after the lackluster campaigns of 4 and 5. I feel like certain games have tried the continuous shot method to their cutscenes lately but it was really affective in Halo. Loved Chief’s characterization and moments of vulnerability. Halo is one of the only FPS’s that feels like it has actual combat, and it really works wonderfully.

Star of the show though, is easily the grappling hook. Made traversal a blast and added an entire new dimension to combat that truly made it a free-flowing system.

2) Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir - What a cool story and interesting deep cut in Nintendo’s catalog. At first I was only interested in one of them but now I’ll definitely play The Girl Who Stands Behind, hopefully before Pokemon Legends comes out. The story was captivating with lots of twists, some you can see coming but others hidden with clever distractions. I was really invested in it.

However. Mechanically, it was incredibly frustrating. There were moments I was talking to a person that I knew exactly what needed to be said to them but given all the options to do and say, the guessing game of finding the right prompt to further the conversation was agonizing at times. There were moments you had to pick the same prompt multiple times in a row in order to get someone to crack, or times the person could say something and 3 options were all applicable, only to find that you needed to hit remember before you selected any of them. You can easily be left in a conversational stalemate with zero clue what to do.

I really want Nintendo to make another one of these. And I’m still excited to play the sequel. I just really hope those aspects are more streamlined and explained more clearly.

I finished Phoenotopia Awakening the other day. Made a thread about it too. Brilliant game.

Moved on to Hypnospace Outlaw. Lots of nostalgia for anyone who grew up using dial-up internet.

1. Final Fantasy XIV - PC - Post Stormblood Quests

2. WarioWare: Get It Together! - NS - Story Mode - 8.5

A Pretty good entry, some tweaks like either making characters a bit more varied or have less of them would have been more beneficial, more so at the times where one character might be a little too tight in the timing to pull off some of the microgames, otherwise I liked the main gimmick. Soundtrack is great, the new microgames are all great. Story is not as good as Gold, even if in itself Gold is an exception and Get It Together still tries to have more of an structure than the more ramdom and bizarre cutscenes of the older games, and still has some solid moments.

3. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (Replay) - NS - Vampire Killer - 10

The good one.

I see there is a thread focused on completed games. Excellent as I am focused on my backlog and I have already beaten four games

Red Faction Guerrilla
Quake
No More Heroes
To The Moon

1) Final Fantasy VII Remake

I really liked it. Best Final Fantasy game I played in years. Well together with XII TZA

2) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. 10/10.
Just defeated the final boss and completed the story a couple hours ago. Okay, it is one of the best games ever made, if not the best. I'm definitely gonna play and beat it again eventually!! Oh, my playtime is about 105 hours!! 😳

1. Undertale.

I went in knowing some spoilers beforehand but I bit the bullet and played it twice anyway. A beautiful, funny, poignant, and very intelligent game. If you've played it, you know, and if you haven't then you don't need to be told again by some rando on the Internet. Really glad I finally played it, amazing experience, will probably start Deltarune in a few weeks.

Started this new year with two old games I've played before.

1) Dragon Quest V
Was in a mood to replay the Zenithia trilogy, wrapped up IV in mid-December and started DQV right away and finished it shortly after new years. Still my favourite in the series, just a fantastic journey all around. I've started VI now but I'm yet to make any real progress in it because I already know that it's considerably longer than both.

2) Super Mario Galaxy 2
My girlfriend got 3D All-Stars back in 2020 and I started all three of them only to realize that I'd rather be playing Galaxy 2 again. Shelved 3D All-Stars but got sidetracked with other stuff until very recently when I brought the Wii U out of storage. Finished it yesterday, doing the green stars now.

1) Chicory - This was a great first game to enter 2022 on, what a wonderful adventure with a really touching story. Light and breezy on the outside but introspective and deep on the inside. Initially I kind of thought the game was going to be a bit of a walking simulator, it didn't feel like there was a lot there in the intro, but the devs quickly layer traversal and interaction mechanics into the gameplay loop and it ends up deeply satisfying. I wonder how I would have got on with it on another platform though, I played nearly the entire experience in handheld mode with a stylus in hand and spent a lot of time coloring in each screen.

Currently working on:

Lost Judgment
Golf Story

The Forgotten City is the first game I've cleared this year. A clever game with a satisfying ending that felt like it rewarded my methodical investigation. It's a time loop game where you're asked to uncover who, in a mysterious Roman city, is about to commit a sin, and thus unleash a curse that promises to kill every inhabitant of the city should any one person sin. It's a game that feels very complex, but not overwhelming. It paces its story well, so I felt like there were new leads and story beats unravelling at a steady rhythm. I was just generally impressed with how digestible I found everything, despite there being so many characters and stories and motives, which feels like a testament to the deft hand at play.

I did have a few nitpicks. It was sometimes frustrating trying to locate certain characters when I needed them to progress—the NPCs all move throughout the day, and I couldn't tell how long this day was or where they were going. Not sure how they could solve for this, as finding people in certain locations is naturally apart of the mystery solving process. The other major issue was that certain dialogue prompts would permanently disappear after I 'failed' the discussion... despite the time loop. You can't get stuck from this, though, and ultimately hitting this roadblock forced me to travel down a path I was resisting, and that might've been deliberate.
